Grimsby Town generated one of the most viral football-related social media tweets of 2025 following their historic penalty shootout victory over Manchester United.

David Artell’s side advanced to the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night with a crushing victory over a powerhouse.

With only 30 minutes played at Blundell Park, the League Two side took a surprising 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren, a former United development player.

The visitors staged a second-half rally to force penalties, but Amorim’s team was defeated 12-11 on penalties in one of their most humiliating outcomes in recent memory.

Shortly after the final whistle, Grimsby put salt in the wounds with a post on X, formerly Twitter, that has since acquired almost 150,000 likes.

As seen below, the club’s social media administrator joined in on a meme that has recently gone viral. They said, beside a picture of a fish, “You’ve just been slapped by the fish.”

Here’s how fans on social media responded to the message.

Someone tweeted: “They’re bantering us off the face of the earth,” and a third stated: “My head would be on Mars if we’d just been knocked out by Grimsby Town and they posted this hahah.”

A third commented: “Grimsby Town of League Two, and not so long ago of the National League, tweeted this after defeating Manchester United. Football has never been so back.”

A fourth commented, “Grimsby admin is absolutely off the rails,” while a fifth added, “YOU JUST GOT SLAPPED BY THE FISH.”

Ruben Amorim provides a no-nonsense interview following Grimsby’s defeat
Ruben Amorim, frustrated, agreed that “something has to change” after Grimsby’s mistreatment of them.

In his post-match interview with ITV Sport, he stated: “It’s not about the result. I wasn’t thinking about the repercussions. I believe the guys were very vocal about their desires today. I’d just like to apologize to our fans.

“Everything was missing. We must be proud to go to the pitch. We did well in the Premier League, and now we come to a fourth-tier team and play like that.”

“I am shocked,” he said. “We are in a period where we have made many changes and are attempting to combat many issues, but we must show up in these moments.

“When you don’t show up, you feel that something has to change, but we’re not going to change 22 players.”
