After Andre Onana made two mistakes that allowed goals against Lyon, Manchester United supporters all nominated the same guy they believe should take his place.
In Thursday night’s Europa League quarterfinal first-leg match at the Groupama Stadium, Onana, 29, committed a mistake that allowed Lyon to score in the first half.
Leny Yoro tied the scoring just before halftime when the ‘keeper mishandled a regular in-swinging free-kick from Thiago Almada.
At halftime, Paul Scholes, a former United midfielder, shared his opinion on Onana’s mistake.
In reference to the altercation between Onana and Nemanja Matic before to the game, Scholes remarked, “I would have assumed that he would have preferred to keep his mouth shut.” To be honest, I have no idea what the keeper is attempting to do. It’s a terrible error on his part.
Matic replied at a news conference on Wednesday to Onana’s dismaying suggestion that United was a superior team versus Lyon.
Matic remarked, “I respect everyone, but you need to get the answer before you say that.”
“You should be careful what you say if you are among the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.”
He said, “I will doubt myself if David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or [Edwin] van der Sar said that, but if you are among the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s recent history, he needs to prove it before he says, so we’ll see.”
In stoppage time of the second half, Onana made another mistake when he parried a pass to Rayan Cherki, who made no mistake to tie it 2-2 ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford next week. United had believed they had won it via Joshua Zirkzee late on.
Many supporters quickly shared their opinions about Onana’s shortcomings, with some recommending that he be replaced.
Someone said, “BRING BACK DAVID DE GEA, I’VE HAD ENOUGH.”
Someone another said: “Just because Onana sucks doesn’t mean De Gea wasn’t doing the same.”
“Removing De Gea for Onana was the biggest mistake we ever made as a club,” a third person said. We can’t continue to act like this.”
A fourth person clarified: “United get rid of De Gea because he can’t pass the ball, to bring a keeper that can’t save shots and doesn’t pass the ball.”
