Man Utd 3-2 Burnley: Why Amad Diallo Won Penalty Despite Contact Starting Outside Box

An explanation has been provided for why Manchester United was awarded a stoppage-time penalty against Burnley, allowing them to win 3-2 at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were anxious for their first three points of the season after losing to Grimsby in midweek, but Ruben Amorim’s team appeared to walk away with only a point after another poor afternoon.

However, when Amad Diallo’s penalty claims were first denied, a VAR review resulted in a revision to the on-field decision, allowing Bruno Fernandes to score from the spot. An explanation for the penalty has now been provided.

VAR Explanation for Amad Foul

Minutes after the game-changing decision, a post from the Premier League Match Centre account appeared on X, explaining that the penalty was awarded as a consequence of a protracted pulling motion that began outside the penalty area but remained within.

“Following a VAR review, the referee overturned the original ruling of no penalty for Manchester United.

Referee announcement: ‘After review, Burnley eleven engages in sustained tugging action on Manchester United sixteen, resulting in a penalty kick. “My final decision is yellow card and penalty.”

The judgment follows a heated debate during the Chelsea-Fulham match earlier in the afternoon. The Cottagers had an initial goal called off by VAR after Trevor Chalobah was deemed to have been fouled in the buildup.

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean lambasted the decision, saying: “VAR just needs to stay out of it; it’s a complete accident.” When the referee looks at the screen, he has to ask himself, “If I were the VAR, would I send the referee?” I don’t believe he would.
