Man City hit with huge punishment after accepting Premier League rule breaches

After admitting to ten different Premier League rule violations, Manchester City received a heavy penalty.

A private hearing into the case is scheduled for December. City and the Premier League are embroiled in a legal dispute over 115 claims pertaining to financial rule violations.

In a different case, City contested the validity of the league’s Associated Party Transaction (APT) regulations, which forbid teams from making money off of business transactions with owners’ affiliated entities that are thought to be worth more than “fair market value.”

Although the Premier League contended that the ruling had no bearing on the new APT rules because clubs had voted them into effect in November 2024, the 2023 Champions League champions essentially declared victory after the APT rules in their prior incarnation were determined to be unenforceable.

A third, less well-known lawsuit has been pending between the two parties, with City now acknowledging that they violated a stringent Premier League regulation ten times in the 2024–2025 season.

In nine different games this season, the team violated Rule L33 regarding kick-off and restart duties.

On each instance, City was judged to have postponed the start of the second half by one minute and eighteen seconds to two minutes and twenty-four seconds.

The heaviest individual penalty was £210,000 for starting the second half two minutes and twenty-two seconds late in an away match against Ipswich. They have been fined a total of £1.08 million for the ten infractions.

The December 2-1 home loss to Manchester United is the subject of two of the violations, making it a sole violation.

The Premier League and Manchester City have struck a punishment agreement after the club acknowledged that it had violated Rule L.33 regarding kick-off and restart duties, according to a statement on the subject.

“During the 2024–2025 season, there were nine Premier League games with violations.

“Kickoff and restart regulations assist guarantee that the competition is run at the greatest professional level and give fans and participating clubs peace of mind. Additionally, it guarantees that every Premier League game is televised on time.

According to the Premier League, City has “accepted and apologised” for the violations and “reminded the club’s players and football management teams of their responsibilities in complying with Rule L.33.”
