Luis Suarez Staring at Lengthy Ban After ‘Disgusting’ Actions Following Leagues Cup Final

Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez might face a lengthy ban for his actions between the last whistle of Javier Mascherano’s team’s 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup final and the trophy lift. Osaze De Rosario, Alex Roldan, and Paul Rothrock all scored for the Sounders.

However, despite Brian Schmetzer’s men’s excellent victory, much of the post-match discussion centers on Suarez’s vulgar behavior. The ex-Liverpool player got into a couple minor fights during regulation time in what was a tense match from start to finish.

This is not the first time Suarez, who has 38 goals in 77 appearances for his Major League Soccer (MLS) club, has been involved in controversy. He has previously bitten opponents Otman Bakka, Branislav Ivanovic, and Giorgio Chiellini on three consecutive times.

Suarez received an eight-match suspension from the Football Association (FA) in 2011, just four months after joining Liverpool from Ajax, following an inquiry into his racially abusive behavior toward Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

After the final whistle, Suarez, widely considered as one of football’s greatest strikers, felt it was time to confront Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas. Suarez tightly wrapped his arm around the 20-year-old’s neck before being yanked away, and a swarm of players joined the altercation.

Sergio Busquets, who formerly played alongside Suarez at Barcelona, was on hand to support his teammate. Rather of attempting to diffuse the situation, it looked like the experienced midfielder punched Vargas.

Suarez, who had plunged into a crimson mist after losing 3-0 in the final, was subsequently caught on camera berating Sounders director of security Gene Ramirez. The video also appeared to show Suarez spitting at the employee.

Oscar Ustari, Suarez’s Inter Miami teammate, attempted to intercede before the former Ajax and Atletico Madrid forward spat on Ramirez. Again, players from both teams had to be physically separated after a wave of bodies collided on the pitch, resulting in a massive brawl.

MLS authorities have already tightened down on the conduct of spitting at players or match officials, frequently issuing multi-game punishments. Hector Herrera received a three-match ban for spitting in the direction of a referee, one for the red card he received following VAR intervention and two more from the league office. Only two years ago, in 2021, Real Salt Lake right-back. Jasper Loffelsend was punished for two games for spitting at an opponent.

The Sounders will advance directly to the round of 16 of next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup as a result of their victory over Lionel Messi and company, while Mascherano’s team will advance to the earlier stage of the tournament by winning the Leagues Cup in 2025.

“Unfortunately, that is gonna take some attention away from what was a great Sounders performance,” Seattle’s Schmetzer remarked after their triumph. “I may take it as a compliment that their players were frustrated, and frustrations led to actions that should not have occurred on the field. But that should not be the story.
