Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal on Wednesday night, ending Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Champions League. The French team’s tactician’s response to Mikel Arteta’s assertion that his team was superior after two legs went viral.
The north Londoners went to the French capital this week in an attempt to overcome a one-goal disadvantage, but Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi’s goals put them behind two goals that evening. Bukayo Saka scored a consolation goal in the 76th minute.
The defending Ligue 1 champions, who are considered by many to be among the biggest teams to never win the Champions League, will now face Inter Milan, under the mysterious Simone Inzaghi, on Saturday, May 31, at the Allianz Arena in Germany.
“Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don’t agree at all,” Enrique says in response to Arteta’s audacious post-match remarks.
One of the greatest football managers in the world, Arteta, was certain that his team was superior than the other regardless of the outcome of the two-leg match. He even maintained that Arsenal was “100%” the top team in Europe’s main competition this year.
In addition, the 43-year-old disclosed the “feedback” he got from the PSG bench when the final whistle blew. “The feedback I got straight away from their bench was that we were much better than them,” he remarked in an interview with TNT Sports.
Following his celebration with the thousands of fans who flocked to see PSG play, Enrique went into the media hotseat where a reporter questioned him about Arteta’s comments and, in particular, his interactions with the PSG bench.
“When he was sitting where you are, Mikel Arteta stated that Arsenal was the superior team over two legs. Do you agree with him because your bench told you so?” After his team secured a position in the Munich-based final, Enrique, 55, was questioned.
Enrique was eager to refute his friend’s contentious opinion, despite praising Arsenal’s strategy on the road. He was quick to refute the assertion that the Gunners were the “better team” during the two-leg semi-final match, despite the fact that the two are well acquainted from their time together at Barcelona.
“I completely disagree. Although Mikel Arteta is a wonderful buddy, I completely disagree. Since they play the style they enjoy and in the manner I desire, I believe they performed cleverly today and got the match at the ideal time for them.
Enrique went on to add that scoring goals is the be-all and end-all in a football match and that PSG are the legitimate finalists. “But, I think in the two legs, we scored more goals than them – and in football, that’s the most important thing in football. We deserve to be in the final.”
