After a few tough days, Liverpool’s season could disintegrate, despite their lengthy history of daring to dream.

In a match that witnessed 28 shots and 62% possession at Old Trafford, Liverpool were unable to retain their Premier League title as they were drawn 2-2. Arsenal were able to leapfrog them due to a narrow lead in goal differential.

Even if a point doesn’t seem as bad today as it did when the game was over, it still gives the ball back to Liverpool, who will need Mikel Arteta’s team to make a mistake or significantly improve their own goal differential in the next few weeks to regain control.

Paul Merson, Chris Sutton, and Harry Redknapp have all come to a consensus on Liverpool’s matchup against Crystal Palace.

Even though Liverpool will claim they have the firepower to substantially increase the lead, the Gunners are more likely to slip due to Liverpool’s recent games, which have been characterized by wild abandon and lack of control.

To succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, Paul Merson selects “outstanding” candidate.

Thursday night’s 3-0 Europa League loss to Atalanta was shocking; the kind of outcome that made many reevaluate the team’s potential for the upcoming campaign.

Even though they were in the hunt for four trophies in February, Liverpool are now facing a quarter-final exit in Europe’s secondary competition after losing to fierce rivals United in the FA Cup at the same stage.

If Liverpool beat Crystal Palace at Anfield this Saturday, they will regain the Premier League lead, which is a frustrating reality for individuals who take a more pessimistic view of recent events.

Next up, Arsenal will host Aston Villa, a team that is in the hunt for the Champions League, at the Emirates Stadium to assess their performance. It will be intriguing to see how the North Londoners cope with the strain if Klopp’s team can recover from a disappointing week. But, the Reds must attend to their own affairs before anything else.

Despite witnessing their home record of 33 games without a loss crumble earlier this week, the signs still point to a Liverpool victory on that front. Since October 2022, the Reds have won all 28 Premier League games played at Anfield, with the exception of six draws. Their previous home loss at Anfield in front of fans was a 2-1 loss to Leeds United on April 23, 2017. On that particular day seven years ago, Sam Allardyce’s Palace were the guests.

Before Christmas, they had only faced one Premier League team that had prevented them from scoring: Manchester United. Another thing that will justifiably worry Palace boss Oliver Glasner is that Klopp has his five-man, 82-goal frontline at his disposal, with Diogo Jota once again in the mix.

The Reds’ goal-scoring campaign has them within three goals of their total from last season with seven games remaining. While that campaign may not have been the most impressive, Klopp’s squad has been explosive at times this season, as evidenced by their 9-0, 7-0, and 6-1 victories over Bournemouth, Manchester United, and Leeds United, respectively.

The importance of Jota’s comeback is immense. After making his return on Boxing Day against Burnley, the Portugal international went on a scoring binge that ended with his dismissal in the middle of February while playing at Brentford. He has scored 14 goals in just 18 starts since leaving Wolves.

On Thursday night, Jota had two good opportunities to score, but he was understandably rusty after missing nearly two months with a knee injury, so he didn’t capitalize on either of them.

With the exception of November’s game against Tolouse, Liverpool has won all eighteen of his starts. Opta data show that his shot conversion rate of 19.2 is the best it has been for Liverpool since the 2010/11 season. With a conversion rate of 25%, Jota is outperforming the rest of the club’s shooters under Klopp.

The No. 20 goalkeeper was anxious to get some game time in the final to cement his place in Reds history and earn a spot on Portugal’s European Championship team for this summer. After suffering a major calf injury in a 2022 match against Manchester City, Jota allegedly put in extra hours to get back in shape and miss the World Cup.
