Virgil van Dijk has commented on Anthony Gordon’s red card in Liverpool’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle on Monday night. The Reds were thoroughly outplayed at St James’ Park, although they took a two-goal lead before being pegged back prior to Rio Ngumoha’s 100th-minute winner.
Van Dijk Comments on Gordon Red Card
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Van Dijk claimed that he told Gordon that he didn’t think the tackle was deserving of a dismissal and expressed astonishment when the original verdict of a yellow card was reversed.
“Well, I told him, if this isn’t a sending off, I don’t understand football. So I thought it was weird that the referee needed to go to the monitor. But, sadly, such things happen in football. Whether you intended it or not, it happened. “We move on.”
Despite Van Dijk’s allegations, Thierry Henry, who was on punditry duty for Sky for the game, stated that while challenges like this were acceptable in his day, there could be no doubt that it was a sending off now.
“In our day, that may be a foul. “Possibly a yellow, but not a red,” Henry said before criticizing the England international.
“Why are you doing this to yourself? I do not comprehend. It is too distant to approach him. You understand that it is too distant to approach him. He gets carried away with what has been going on, and I understand why. But you cannot deny that it a red.”
Gordon, who has been operating as a replacement striker with Alexander Isak out of the squad due to links with Newcastle’s opponents on Monday, will miss at least three games as a result of the straight red card, including travels to Leeds and Bournemouth, as well as a home match against Wolves.
