Liverpool Release Statement After Diogo Jota’s Tragic Death

Liverpool have issued an official club statement acknowledging the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The 28-year-old Portugal international died in the early hours of Thursday morning after being involved in a horrific automobile crash with his 26-year-old brother, Andre, who also plays for Penafiel.

The heartbreaking news of Jota’s death comes just two weeks after he married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto. To commemorate the union of love, the couple posted photos of their wedding in front of the altar with their three children on social media. The caption said, “June 22, 2025.” “Yes, to forever.”

The club have kept things short and sweet out of respect for those affected

While the rest of the football world took a time to reflect on Jota’s life both on and off the game, the Reds’ statement was considerably more private in order to respect those touched by the news. It read, according to the official club website:

“Liverpool Football Club is grieved by the untimely death of Diogo Jota. The club has been notified that the 28-year-old died in a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother Andre.

“Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club personnel be respected as they try to cope with an incomprehensible tragedy. We will continue to offer them our full support.

The forward’s national team have requested a period of mourning

In another statement, the Portugal FA asked UEFA for a moment of silence before their women’s teams’ first European Championship game against Spain on Thursday night. It read (see the complete statement below):

“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva this morning in Spain.”

“Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community.”

The message said, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to Diogo and Andre Silva’s family and friends. The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested that UEFA hold a minute of silence this Thursday before our national team’s match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

“We’ve lost two champs. The deaths of Diogo and Andre Silva are irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their memory every day.”
