Liverpool are apparently ‘planning’ a trade deal that will bring Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi to Anfield this summer.
Liverpool may have won their opening two Premier League games, but they have looked vulnerable defensively.
The Reds beat Bournemouth in their first game of the season, but they looked vulnerable after conceding two goals to Antoine Semenyo.
It was more of the same versus Newcastle’s ten-man squad.
Arne Slot’s team squandered a two-goal lead before stealing all three points with a late goal from 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
Liverpool has a star-studded defence, with Premier League great Virgil van Dijk and French international Ibrahima Konate partnering at centre back.
However, things might not be as secure as they appear.
Van Dijk, 34, is nearing the end of his career, while his counterpart has supposedly been turned on by whispers of a move to Real Madrid.
Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi could be the solution.
The Palace captain helped his team win the FA Cup last season and has been a consistent performer since joining from Chelsea in the summer of 2021.
His performances have led to speculation that he could join Liverpool, although the Eagles are unwilling to sell after losing Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
However, Sami Mokbel believes the Reds can use Joe Gomez to complete the deal.
“Marc Guehi to Liverpool, it’s back on,” he announced during an appearance on 5 Live.
“According to our understanding this morning, Palace are intrigued and would most likely accept a £30 million request from Liverpool for Joe Gomez on loan.
“As things are, Liverpool will absolutely refuse any proposal like that.
“They don’t want to loan Joe Gomez; they could be willing to sign him on a permanent basis, but not on a loan. There’s something to watch in that place.”
Gomez made only 17 appearances for the Premier League champions last season due to injuries.
The defender joined Liverpool in 2015 and has earned 15 England caps.
Crystal Palace has yet to win a game this season after drawing with Chelsea and Nottingham Forest in their first two matches.
