Liverpool have issued a formal statement confirming Diogo Jota and his brother’s deaths in a horrific vehicle accident.

Tragic news broke early Thursday morning that Liverpool forward Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident in Spain.

The Portugal international was involved in the collision, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday in the northwestern province of Zamora.

Only five days before the disaster, the 28-year-old married long-term lover Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, in a ceremony in Porto.

Since the announcement, several former players have spoken out, and Liverpool has now issued a statement confirming the fact.

The official club statement read: “The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has died in a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother, Andre.”

“Liverpool FC will make no further comment at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club personnel be respected as they try to cope with an incomprehensible tragedy.

“We will continue to offer them our full support.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and played 182 games for the club, scoring 65 goals and won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

He went on to become a fan favourite, earning himself a popular song that has been played at Anfield for years.

FC Porto, the forward’s old club, issued a statement saying: “FC Porto is in sadness.

“We express our profound sympathies to Diogo Jota’s family and friends, as well as his brother Andre Silva, who was also a youth athlete with us. Rest in peace.

Manchester United paid tribute to Diogo Jota.
Shortly after Liverpool’s statement, Premier League rivals Manchester United expressed their condolences to Jota’s family and everyone associated with Liverpool.

It begins with this: “Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news.”

Everton, a local rival, updated their social media profile image to black and white, echoing United’s words and expressing their condolences to the Liverpool star’s family.

Their statement read, “Everyone at Everton is terribly grieved by the unfortunate passing of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. At this tragic time, our thoughts are with their family and friends.
