After winning the 2024–25 Premier League a week earlier with a resounding 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool took the field to a Guard of Honour. However, the keen-eyed Anfield supporters are furious after seeing one Chelsea player choose to hardly participate.
As Enzo Maresca’s team was the first to play the Reds after their official title win, they were expected to provide a Guard of Honour. Last weekend, Arne Slot, who had first tried after inheriting Jurgen Klopp’s ready-made squad, tied Manchester United’s record of 20 English top flight titles.
After watching one Chelsea player’s actions, the Reds, led by Slot, who became the first Dutch tactician to ever win England’s top flight title, traveled to the West Londoners this weekend as league champions, having won the league title with four games remaining. However, they left the game with a bad taste in their mouth.
Liverpool Fans Slam Chelsea Player
Footage of the Guard of Honour has emerged
Chelsea players lined up on either side of Liverpool’s league-winning squad, commanded by captain Virgil van Dijk, as was decided before kickoff. As anticipated, on Sunday afternoon, players like Nicolas Jackson, Levi Colwill, and Cole Palmer cheered their opponents onto the field.
Nevertheless, Noni Madueke was unable to fulfill his role and was spotted approving casually with his teammates from West London, who were prepared to face the nation’s top clubs. Fans of Anfield have consequently gone to X (previously Twitter) to vent their disgust.
After viewing the aforementioned video, which was provided by James Pearce of The Athletic, a fan criticized Madueke’s performance during the guard of honor, writing: “Madueke so cringe, he’s desperate to come across as a hard man.” In a similar vein, another admirer stated:
“Might be the most pathetic clapping I’ve ever seen that from Madueke.”
“Madueke wasn’t enjoying that guard of honour was he?” After seeing the video, another Liverpool fan made a suggestion, and a fourth and final judge said the English winger showed little regard for Liveprool’s victory. “Madueke has no respect!” they wrote. Not that he was clapping.
Chelsea, who themselves have won the Premier League five times (in 2003/04, 2004/05/05, 08/09, 13/14, and 15/16), has previously lined up for Liverpool. They also accomplished this in 2020 when they hosted the ecstatic Merseysiders, who were supposed to raise the English Premier League title.
