The ‘exceptional’ England player who could have played alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona was a player that Lionel Messi had no reservations about associating with.
During his time at Barcelona, Messi achieved a remarkable four Champions League titles, making his time there a legendary one.
During his time at Camp Nou, he was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of some of the best players in the world, including Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Neymar, and Luis Suarez.
Manchester United was defeated by Messi and Pep Guardiola in two of his Champions League victories. Both of these victories came against Manchester United.
In the 2008–2009 season, Barcelona defeated Manchester United by a score of 2-0 in Rome, Italy. In the 2010–2011 season, Barcelona beat Manchester United by a score of 3-1 in London, England.
Pedro opened the scoring for his team during their match at Wembley Stadium. Wayne Rooney then equalised the score, Messi then put his team back in front, and David Villa finished things off.
Due to the fact that Messi referred to Rooney as a “exceptional” player who had the potential to flourish in La Liga, it is evident that Rooney’s performance against Barcelona left an impression on Messi.
In response to a question about why England is unable to produce football players of world-class calibre, he defended the English players.
“I am not sure that it is true,” he stated in the year 2015, referring to the statement. “If you look at the technical ability of a player like Wayne Rooney, he is as good as any player in Europe.”
The Argentine responded, “As I mentioned earlier, Rooney possesses exceptional quality.” This was in response to a question about which English players would be successful in Spain’s top flight. Not only does he have excellent technical ability, but he also puts in a lot of effort for his team. Despite this, I have no doubt that Manchester United will never consider allowing him to leave.
The feeling is mutual, as Rooney responded to the compliment by referring to Messi as the greatest player of all time, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo, who was his former teammate at Manchester United.
“In my opinion, Messi is the best player in the history of the game. On The Overlap, which is brought to you by Sky Bet, he stated, “I get a lot of stick for saying Messi where it’s as if, ‘How can you say Messi, it’s Ronaldo.'” You can listen to The Overlap here.
They are both incredible, and they are probably the best two players who have ever played the game. I understand that people can say that Messi and Ronaldo are the best players in baseball history.
“For me, Messi has just got that little bit more flair, which I like in a player, so that’s the reason.”
