During the fourth round of the FA Cup, Leyton Orient took the lead against Manchester City. This was one of the most monumental moments in the history of the FA Cup in recent times.
In the early stages of the match at Brisbane Road, the League One team was more than ready to put up a fight against the team that was currently defending their title as Premier League champions.
There were a lot of problems for City’s defence when they were on the counterattack, and it could be argued that Orient was a better value to take the lead in the first fifteen minutes of the game.
At Brisbane Road, they did indeed take the lead, and they did so in a graceful manner.
Following Orient’s successful regaining of possession of the ball from Nico Gonzalez, Tottenham loanee Jamie Donley spotted Stefan Ortega off his line and unleashed a shot from nearly fifty yards out.
Ortega was unable to prevent the ball from going over his head and hitting the crossbar. The ball then made contact with the German custodian and found its way into the back of the net.
This touch resulted in the goal being recorded as an own goal, which was a sad consequence; however, it was still a moment that everyone associated with Orient will remember fondly.
The players from City made a request for a foul to be called on Nico during the buildup, despite the fact that it did not appear that there was significant contact. Every single one of the FA Cup fourth round matches, including the ones that are being played at Premier League grounds, will not have video assistant referees (VAR) in operation.
As was previously mentioned, Donley is currently playing for the League One club on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season. Additionally, Ange Postecoglou is providing him with the opportunity to play more first team football.
Under the direction of Richie Wellens, who is a season ticket holder at none other than Manchester United, he has made 21 appearances for Orient in League One and has scored five goals in those games.
