Leicester City Premier League title winner named new boss of struggling club in shock announcement

Former Leicester City defender Christian Fuchs has been named as the new manager of League Two club Newport County.

Christian Fuchs, the Leicester City Premier League title winner, has been chosen manager of League Two club Newport County in an unexpected move.

The Manchester City defender has signed a long-term contract with Rodney Parade.

Newport chairman Huw Jenkins said on the appointment: “We regard Christian as the type of man to take our club forward. I believe he shares our ambitions and aims for Newport County FC.

“I believe we can now look forward with a lot of optimism. We’ll try to better our present League Two standing and then go on from there.

“Christian is ambitious and wants, one day, to manage in the Premier League, we believe he shares our strong belief in what Newport County can eventually become.”

Fuchs faces a huge challenge in Newport. According to the Mirror, the Welsh team is at the bottom of the Football League, having won only three of their first 16 games.

David Hughes had only been installed as manager during the summer but was terminated last week after their most recent setback. Newport’s first match under Fuchs will be away to Oldham Athletic this weekend at Boundary Park.

Fuchs, 39, enjoyed a successful career in Germany before joining City in 2015. In his first season with the Foxes, he helped them win the Premier League title.

Before joining MLS club Charlotte FC, the former Austrian international helped Leicester win the FA Cup in 2020/21 under Brendan Rodgers.

After just one season with the team, Fuchs retired and began coaching.

In the United States, he worked in the backstage for Dean Smith, the former manager of Aston Villa and Leicester.

Fuchs appeared 32 times in City’s best season, with the left-back playing every minute of the club’s final ten games on his way to one of the greatest sporting achievements in history.
