After a “incredible” season at King Power Stadium that saw the Foxes gain promotion to the top flight, Leicester star Conor Coady feels his call to leave the Premier League was justified.
Conor Coady thinks leaving the Premier League to join Leicester City was a brave move that ended up being one of his best career decisions.
The seasoned defender moved from Wolves to play Championship football regularly with the Foxes. And the risky move paid off handsomely, as manager Enzo Maresca’s excellent team was promoted back to the top division.
“It’s fantastic,” Coady exclaimed. “The boys have been amazing, especially after going through a full season like we have. Going back to the Premier League is also justified, considering that I left the league to come to Leicester.
“It makes me feel proud, and I don’t think about myself too much,” the speaker said. However, it’s been absolutely fantastic to do it with this club, particularly the way we have.
“I really have had the good fortune to play for some amazing football teams, but this is just another one of them. It’s incredible from the owner, employees, manager, and players all the way around.
“It makes sense that we were promoted. I was eager to arrive at Leicester because it’s a big football team.”
Despite spending £7.5 million on a Foxes jersey last summer, Coady has only appeared in 12 league games for the team this year. However, his background in the industry proved to be invaluable.
“We set out to become champions at the beginning of the season, and we’ve succeeded in doing so,” he continued. We knew exactly what we wanted to do because it is what the club must do and where it must be.
When it counted, the staff, manager, and players delivered. For us, this has been an incredible, wonderful season. We’ll have a great celebration.
With two games remaining, the Foxes managed to gain promotion from the second division; however, it was a 3-0 thumping of Preston North End at Deepdale that saw them rightfully crowned Championship champions.
The 31-year-old center back Coady, who spent a large portion of the previous season on loan at Everton, feels the team needs to maintain focus because so many people were picking them to return to the top flight.
Coady, who was promoted to Hull during the 2017–18 season, emphasized, “Listen, I think everybody thought we were going to cruise it in February, but it was never ever going to be like that – and we knew that.”
“We’ve performed admirably and fulfilled our obligations. The fans come watch us play for a good price; winning the league is their reward.
“It’s all for the supporters and what they do, whether Leicester City wins anything or gets promoted. It’s fantastic for the entire football team as well as for them and us.
“You must have witnessed the owner’s celebrations [after we were promoted]. This football team is incredibly close-knit. I find it to be truly amazing.
“This year, the boys have been amazing.”
