I don’t know about you, but back when we at FFT were young and had long summer vacations from school, we would sit down and make lists of the players we thought should be on our teams for the upcoming season.
That was back in the day when players used to get upgraded as a rite of passage and numbers 1 through 11 were more highly valued. However, these days, a growing number of players are loyal to the numbers they are assigned early in their careers, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 66 for Liverpool and Phil Foden’s 47 for Manchester City.
Thus, it’s becoming more difficult to predict where a big-name acquisition, like Joshua Zirkzee, a new center-forward for Manchester United, will fall into the squad number hierarchy.

For fans of the classics, there’s good news: Zirkzee doesn’t appear to have a favourite number. Throughout his career, he has worn a variety of numbers, usually attempting to become smaller as he goes. As long as it makes sense, for example; he won’t go all Milan Baros and wear number 5. In any case, he would have to battle Harry Maguire for it.
Zirkzee made his senior debut for Bayern Munich in the 2019–20 season wearing the number 35 shirt. However, the next season, he was assigned the number 14 shirt, which is only fitting for a Dutchman who has been widely favoured by Johan Cruyff.
Zirkzee wore 17 when he moved to Parma on loan, then 23 when he moved to Anderlecht on another loan. Paul Wanner had grabbed his number 14, thus he was in 32 when he returned to Bayern Munich. Zirkzee wore number 11 during his first half-season in Bologna, but he switched it to number 9 the following season, a la Roberto Firmino.

For the Dutch under-21 team, Zirzkee has worn jerseys 9, 10, and 11 in addition to #20. He was given the number 21 shirt for Euro 2024.
Since Anthony Martial left Manchester United, the number 9 shirt is thankfully unoccupied, so if we had to guess, we’d venture to say he would really like to wear it.
Few of the other numbers he has worn in the past are still available: Marcus Rashford has 10, Jonny Evans has 35, Luke Shaw has 23, Antony has 21, Christian Eriksen has 14 and Rasmus Hojlund has 11.
