Kasper Schmeichel Picked ‘Next Level’ Goalkeeper Ahead of Liverpool’s Alisson

In brief
There is currently a custodian in the Premier League who is superior to Alisson, according to Kasper Schmeichel.
Alisson, who is frequently praised as the best custodian of the modern era, earned his spot with a spectacular Champions League performance against PSG.
However, Ederson deserves recognition, and his assist total is self-evident.
Former Leicester City Premier League winner Kasper Schmeichel claims that there is only one goalie in the world of football whose skills are superior to even Alisson of Liverpool’s almost otherworldly prowess. With his stunning display of goalkeeping prowess against PSG in the Champions League, the Brazilian has been making waves lately.

In a display that will be remembered for years, if not decades, the 32-year-old made nine saves against the Ligue 1 powerhouses, giving the crowd something to remember. The Reds were surrounded and took 27 shots, 10 of which were on goal, before Harvey Elliott’s first effort found the back of the net to give them an incredible smash-and-grab victory. Below are some of Alisson’s highlights:

Reds fans would tell you that Alisson has been playing like way for years, and as a result, he is without a doubt one of the top goalkeepers in the game right now. Schmeichel, however, was not persuaded that he was at the top of the list despite his valiant actions in Europe. Rather, he thinks his countryman is in charge.

Kasper Schmeichel Claims Ederson is Better than Alisson

The Celtic ‘keeper was left awe-inspired by the Man City man’s distribution

Once upon a time, goalkeepers were ranked simply primarily on how well they fared with their hands. But in the modern rendition of the beautiful game, there is just as much focus on how well glove-bearers can put their feet to good use.

Speaking on an episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Schmeichel was asked to decide between the two Brazilian shot-stoppers, and picked Ederson for that reason. Watch the entire segment below to hear what he said:

“I believe that both Alisson and Edwards are excellent. Ederson, in my opinion, transformed the game so that Manuel Neuer could play from the back, but Ederson’s play was so poetic to see that I’ve always had a soft place for him.”

“I remember playing against him for Leicester, and it (Manchester City) was the one team we didn’t press because if you’d press Ederson, he’d just find David Silva or (Kevin) De Bruyne – he’d play these ridiculous passes,” Schmeichel added.

“And even with Leicester, our outball was Jamie Vardy most of the time – (we) couldn’t do it. And when you speak about adding something to the team, when they (City) have been at their best in their pressing — believe me, I’ve been at the end of a couple of these – you feel smothered. There wouldn’t be many one-on-one encounters during the game because Ederson would simply chest it down and pass it.

“For that reason, Ederson just brought something a little different to me in that he was so brave in his starting position and high that it meant he could press, and sometimes he didn’t even need to keep goals because he’d stop it at the source.”

Ederson’s Contribution to the Success of Manchester City
He is the goalie with the most Premier League assists.

Under Pep Guardiola, Manchester City has been known for their strong press and Ederson’s ability to identify the majority of their outfield players directly. This has helped them win six Premier League titles and numerous other domestic and international honours, including the historic treble of the 2022–2023 season. The Brazilian goalie has more Premier League assists than any other goalie.

Ederson has made 360 appearances for Man City since moving there for £35 million from Benfica in 2017. He has only scored 300 goals during that period, but he has amassed 162 clean sheets. He has earned 32 Brazil caps and 12 clean sheets for his country, while frequently playing second fiddle to Alisson in international competitions.
