Jurgen Klopp: ‘Liverpool Would Never Have Been Successful Without Underrated British Hero’

The most successful Liverpool manager in recent history is Jurgen Klopp. In 2015, the German, who is now considered one of the best Premier League managers ever, took over the leadership of a dormant monster. He not only roused the giant but also gave the English team new life.

He entered a club with aging players, overvalued celebrities, and a gulf between the devoted Anfield supporters and those in the red shirt. Klopp swiftly forged a bond between supporters and club officials, replicating his success in Germany with Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund.

Many of the players that played in his 2015 Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur were promptly replaced, and during his eight-year tenure, the German left his stamp on the team with a number of astute additions. Nonetheless, a number of important leaders were kept on board and were crucial to Klopp’s success on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp on the Impact of ‘Role Model’ James Milner

Liverpool’s success impossible without the Englishman

James Milner, a former England international, was one of the more seasoned professionals that came to Anfield prior to Klopp. The former Manchester City and Aston Villa star was signed by Brendan Rodgers on a free transfer, and he was named Jordan Henderson’s vice captain right away.

It’s possible that Milner, who is still playing at the age of 39, would be worried about his job when Rodgers left a few months after he arrived. He did, however, play a crucial role in the Reds’ success during the following eight years, leading them to Premier League and Champions League titles.

The diligent worker was one of the most important players during Klopp’s tenure, playing a number of positions, including wing, central midfield, right-back, and left-back. Following a match against Newcastle United in 2022, the manager himself admitted this. According to The Guardian, Klopp boldly asserted the following regarding his vice captain:

“He serves as an example. I’ve told him—I can tell the entire world—that without James Milner, none of the accomplishments we’ve made in recent years would have been possible.

“Whether he was on the pitch or not, he’s set standards in a way not a lot of people can set standards, and it educated all of us.”

Milner, who played 332 games for the Reds from 2015 to 2023, isn’t often given the recognition he merits as a major contributor to the numerous titles Liverpool won under Klopp. Nonetheless, everyone he worked with, including his former boss, always appreciated him.

Klopp, Jurgen James Milner was labeled “Complete.”

Klopp was quick to dismiss claims that drastic changes were necessary, even though the team was sagging in the middle of the Premier League standings when he replaced Rodgers. Speaking following his team’s 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane in his debut, Klopp singled out a number of players for commendation.

He mentioned Brazilians Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva, as well as fellow countrymen Emre Can and Adam Lallana, as excellent professionals and valuable additions to the team. But maybe the greatest compliment he gave was to Milner. According to Sky Sports, Klopp called the Englishman “complete” as he said:

“Milner? The ideal professional, the whole football player. [You believe] I ought to impart technical knowledge to them? They are aware. We must all work together to help them demonstrate it.
