During the match against Osasuna that took place on Saturday, Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham received a straight card for what appeared to be a display of discontent toward referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero.
A frustrated Bellingham could be seen talking to Montero near the center circle in the 38th minute. Montero was protesting an earlier incident, and Bellingham was expressing his frustration.
At the time of this writing, it is not clear what the England international player said; however, as the midfielder turned away, the referee proceeded to stop the game and then produced a straight red card, which prompted many people to protest.
As you can see in the video that follows, Montero, who is 21 years old, appeared to be confused as his teammates from Los Blancos surrounded him to express their displeasure with the decision.
“Jude Bellingham was shown a straight red for something he said to the referee during the Osasuna vs. Real Madrid fixture,” said journalist Jonas Adnan Giaever on X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
“Considering Real Madrid currently are at odds with the referees and the Spanish Football Federation, this just adds fuel to a fire.”
There have been two occasions in which Bellingham has been sent off while wearing a Real Madrid shirt. As a result of their heated match against Valencia in March 2024, which ended in a 2-2 draw, he was also given his marching orders the following month.
In the beginning of this month, the former midfielder for Birmingham City and Borussia Dortmund ran the risk of being punished for his foul-mouthed outburst that he made during Real Madrid’s match against Atletico Madrid.
Bellingham lost his composure after the linesman signaled for Atletico rather than Real, which led to the incident that occurred after the ball was thrown in for a throw-in. The Daily Mail reported that he was heard yelling, “F*** you, man!” in response to the situation. Leave me alone!
Other news includes the fact that Real Madrid has lodged a formal complaint with the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in response to the contentious La Liga loss that they suffered to Espanyol earlier this month.
After the loss, Carlo Ancelotti expressed his displeasure with the officials, saying, “The decision that the referee and the video assistant referee made is inexplicable.” Everyone witnessed it.
Protecting the player is the most important thing that can be done. It is an obvious violation and a very unpleasant challenge. On the bright side, there were no injuries sustained, but the video assistant referee is always available to help. That he did not show a red card is something that we are unable to comprehend.
There have been previous instances in which Florentino Perez, the president of Madrid, has advocated for the Spanish Football Association to recruit referees from the Premier League in order to enhance the quality of officiating in La Liga.
