After losing to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, Manchester United’s problems under Ruben Amorim persisted.
Despite their difficult start to the season, Amorim’s team entered the game ahead of their opponents in the Premier League standings. However, Pep Guardiola’s team easily defeated them 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, totally outclassing them from beginning to end.
City took all three points thanks to a brace from Erling Haaland in the second half and an early lead from Phil Foden.
Ruben Amorim Says He Won’t Modify His Strategy

At Sporting CP, Amorim was very successful when using a 3-4-3 system. He hasn’t had as much success at Manchester United, though, playing that formation.
Since Amorim was hired in November 2024, United has now dropped 16 of its 31 Premier League games. Amorim has repeatedly stated that he will not alter his mindset in spite of that poor record. Following the loss to Man City, he made remarks that infuriated United supporters by stating his determination to continue using his tactics. According to ESPN, he stated:
“I refuse to alter my philosophy. You can alter the man if they [the United hierarchy] want it changed. I have no intention of altering my philosophy. Until I desire to change, I will continue to play my way.
“Dude, I acknowledge that it is not a record you ought to have at Manchester United and I comprehend [the inquiries]. However, there are a lot of things that have happened in the past few months that you are unaware of.
“Everything makes sense to me. I disagree that we are not improving, but it is reasonable [if fans are losing faith]. I know the record speaks for itself, but the results don’t reflect the fact that we are doing better. I’m saying, I’ll do everything in my power. I’ll do anything. The rest is not my choice. I’ll try my hardest. I’m going through more pain than [the fans].
Jose Mourinho’s Comments Re-Emerge

Jose Mourinho’s remarks have surfaced again and became widely shared after Amorim promised not to alter his strategy. Mourinho criticized managers in the summer who are unyielding and stick to their philosophy in spite of subpar performance.
According to the Mirror, he stated, “There isn’t a single game model anymore.” “Play can be done in a variety of ways. There are numerous approaches to building and defending; there is no longer a tactical strategy.
This calls for a far more tactical approach to training, where players must develop and learn new skills. The desire to copy and paste without the required conditions is the issue.
“It’s challenging to play from the back when your goalie is wooden. I recall that Guardiola had the best goalie in England, Hart. Claudio Bravo was what he wanted, but it wasn’t enough. Thus, Ederson was signed.
“Some coaches attempt unsuccessful ideas and declare, ‘I died with my idea.'” You’re a fool if you die with your concept. Coaches must modify their concepts to fit their current situation.
He went on: “I don’t say that without respect, it’s true that coaches whose names I don’t even know now play in the Premier League.”
Some coaches are selected based on statistics and dates rather than wins. At that level, perceptions are formed, and the notion that playing and appearing like this is more essential than winning has drastically shifted.
