After winning the Premier League in 2006, Jose Mourinho really threw Robert Huth’s medal into the Chelsea supporters instead of his own. Neil Barnett, a former Chelsea pitch announcer and presenter, says so.
Everyone believed that Mourinho was the owner of the medal after seeing the famous footage of him tossing it into the Matthew Harding End. But it turns out that the famed Portuguese coach wasn’t really making this a selfless gesture to the Chelsea supporters. Rather, it is believed that tall centre-back Huth was the rightful owner of the medal.
A picture of Mourinho tossing a medal into the stands was posted on Twitter by a Chelsea supporter account with the following caption: “Jose Mourinho shows his affection for Chelsea supporters by tossing his 2005–06 Premier League winner’s medal into the crowd.” Forever, one of us.” But Barnett, who spent 32 years at the club until departing in 2018, provided an alternative account of what transpired on Twitter:
“It wasn’t his. To make a move, Robert Huth was the one who hadn’t shown up that day.
It wasn't his. It was Robert Huth's who hadn't reported that day in order to force a move https://t.co/6V1BqZjMSS

Huth deserved a winners’ medal because he had played in 13 Premier League games that season. But in an attempt to compel a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, the German was left out of three of the previous four match-day squads. And it appears that Mourinho was so incensed by his absence on the season’s last day, when Chelsea defeated Manchester United 3-0, that he threw away his medal.

Huth did, in fact, obtain a move that summer, agreeing to a £6 million, five-year deal with Middlesbrough. On the same day that then-manager Gareth Southgate expanded his defensive options, former Real Madrid centre-back Jonathan Woodgate also joined Boro.
Mourinho asserts that he forfeited two medals.
The former Chelsea manager later gave an explanation.

The former Chelsea manager asserted that he also passed on Huth’s medal, even though Mourinho may have “given” it away. When the Portuguese manager observed, “The crowd here is special,” “They have made a significant contribution to our domestic record. The Matthew Harding Stand makes it even more memorable.
It was a medal for everybody. The fortunate person will either make a fortune on eBay or return home with an amazing recollection. I also took the second one that was given to me.
“I kept the medal for myself in Porto. There was only one for the Champions League. It might be hard to get another one in the future, I guessed. The medal is the identical one I had from the Premier League last season. You can’t have it all.”
Throwback to when José Mourinho won the 05/06 PL title with Chelsea and threw his medal to the fans dedicating the Premier League title to all of them. Then he found another medal on the floor… And gave that one to the fans as well.

In 2008, a fortunate Chelsea supporter sold one of Mourinho’s medals for a staggering £21,600, according to the Daily Mail. Two years later, a second medal sold for £16,800 at auction.
It appears that the poor Huth owns one of those. At least the German eventually earned a winners’ medal around his neck after leading Leicester City to an incredible Premier League triumph in 2016.

Additionally, Mourinho threw away the AS Roma medal; this time, it was a silver one instead of a gold one.

In 2023, Mourinho threw his medal into the crowd once more after his AS Roma team lost to Sevilla in the Europa League final. When his team lost to Sevilla in Budapest on penalties, Mourinho’s undefeated run in the European finals came to an end.
After the game, the renowned manager waited for referee Anthony Taylor in the parking lot to challenge his decisions since he was upset with him. “I want to stay at Roma,” he stated in his post-match interview. However, both I and my players deserve better. Being a coach, a man of communication, and the club spokesperson who claims we were robbed after every game wears me out a little.
“I’m sick of playing all the parts. We’re not cut out for the Champions League, therefore it’s a good thing we won’t be participating next year. And let’s hope that Taylor doesn’t officiate in the Europa League, but only in the Champions League, where he acts the same as he did tonight.”
Following the final, BT Sport commentator Gaizka Mendieta responded to Mourinho’s medal throw. “He gave the medal to his fan another way of saying ‘I don’t want a silver medal,'” the former Valencia and Barcelona player stated. The fact that the fan will always remember it makes it pleasant.
6 Huth Still Regards Mourinho With Respect
called the Portuguese coach “amazing.”

The former Germany international still has the utmost regard for his old manager, even though it appears like Mourinho threw his award into the crowd. “He is incredible. According to the Mirror, Huth told Paddy Power’s Pitch Invader magazine, “Everyone was in awe of him when he came to Chelsea after winning the Champions League at Porto.”
“He completely changed the game for me and my career. He simply elevated the club to a new level with his preparation, training, and philosophy. Although it was always wonderful, there was something special about him—the extreme degree of detail for both training and games. We trained with ballboys! It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
“He didn’t want to keep a player or staff member from collecting balls for even a single minute. As a result, he recruited some local kids to help with the ongoing training. ‘Whoah, this man means business!’ I recall thinking. He had a huge impact. He was unconcerned. All he wanted was to win.
