Jean-Philippe Mateta, a forward for Crystal Palace, has broken his silence following the serious injury he sustained while playing against Millwall.
In the eighth minute of Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory over Millwall in the FA Cup fifth round at Selhurst Park on Saturday, Mateta, who is 27 years old, was the victim of a reckless challenge that was made by Millwall custodian Liam Roberts.
The Frenchman was kicked on the side of the head by Roberts, who is thirty years old and attempted to clear a loose ball.
After that, the woman, who was 27 years old, received medical attention on the pitch and was given oxygen before being transported to the hospital in an ambulance.
BBC Sport reports that he is scheduled to “undergo surgery on his ear” in the near future.
A challenge that Palace chairman Steve Parish referred to as “the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I’ve ever seen” left him in a state of rage.
In an interview with BBC Sport during the halftime break, Paris stated, “There is a lot of emotion in football, but we need to talk about that challenge.”
“I have never witnessed a challenge quite like it… that is the most reckless challenge I have ever witnessed on a football pitch at any time in my life.
“He [Liam Roberts] needs to take a long, hard look at himself because he is putting a fellow professional in danger by posing such a challenge,” the speaker said.
It is beyond my comprehension as to why the referee is required to appear on the screen. Who knows what kind of damage could be done if you were to kick him in the head with all of your strength?
