Jamie Carragher spots concerning thing ref allowed in Liverpool shootout vs PSG that doesn’t ‘normally’ happen

During the Champions League round of 16 penalty shootout victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night, Jamie Carragher has expressed his confusion regarding the events that led to Paris Saint-Germain gaining a rare double advantage.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first leg of the match, Paris Saint-Germain prevailed in the second meeting by a score of 1-0 thanks to a single goal scored by Ousmane Dembele, which forced the game to be decided by penalty kicks.

PSG was successful in all of their penalty kicks, and Gianluigi Donnarumma made two crucial saves to prevent Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones from scoring. Desire Doue then scored the game-winning goal, which allowed Luis Enrique’s team to advance to the quarterfinals.

Despite the fact that he was still on duty for CBS Sports, Carragher watched the game from inside Anfield. After the game, he mentioned that he noticed that Paris Saint-Germain had two advantages for the shootout.

In addition to taking the first kick through Vitinha, the penalties were not taken at the Kop end but rather at the end where Paris Saint-Germain had their section of fans.

PSG has a double advantage, according to Carragher.
Carragher discussed the outcome of the coin toss between Virgil van Dijk and Achraf Hakimi, saying, “One thing I couldn’t work out with the penalties was, obviously there was a coin toss with Virgil van Dijk [and PSG’s captain].” Achraf Hakimi was the player who won the penalty.

It is likely that PSG won the game in order to move it to the opposite end of the field (away from the Kop), but they also took the first penalty. So I wasn’t entirely sure what took place in that location.

“In a typical situation, you are only awarded one advantage, and the opposing team is awarded the first penalty, but Paris Saint-Germain deserved to advance.”

“Listen, the best team won, but I am really feeling a little bit deflated about it. Due to the fact that we have witnessed how well PSG performed in the first leg, I referred to it as a robbery to make it 1-0.

According to the official FIFA rules, the two coin tosses are used to determine both the goal and the order of the penalties. The winning captain is the one who has the authority to make the decision. This information is provided on the website of the Olympic Games.

A section of the website provides information: “A penalty shootout starts with two coin tosses – the first to determine the side of the field where the kicks will be taken from and the second to determine which team takes the first kick of the penalty shootout”.

The first coin toss had already been won by Paris Saint-Germain, and they made the strategic decision to switch ends at the beginning of the game. This meant that Liverpool attacked the Kop in the first half, and then they attacked Anfield Road in the second half.

In the quarterfinals, they will face either Aston Villa or Club Brugge, with Unai Emery’s team currently holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg of the match.
