Jamie Carragher was renowned for his combative style of play and his dedication as a defender. He never shied away from a physical or mental altercation, which made life difficult for strikers during his time at Liverpool and with England. Whether it was verbal sparring or smashing tackles, Carragher thrived on conflict and never let his enthusiasm falter, even in charity matches.
He still applies the same fervour and directness to his analysis as a popular Sky and CBS Sports commentator after retirement. Carragher’s unwavering will to compete, defend, and sacrifice all for the team is the foundation of his legend. Nevertheless, the 47-year-old has been able to demonstrate his tough demeanour on the pitch even though his playing days are over.
Over the years, the former defender has been spotted participating in a number of charity games and testimonials, such as Michael Carrick’s, in which he comically tracked down and eliminated Gary Neville, his co-conspirator. Things were a touch more savage when Carragher participated in the Wembley Cup back in 2016, but otherwise it was all fun and games amongst the reluctant buddies. In a glorified exhibition, two teams comprised of football legends and YouTubers faced off against one another. However, Carragher regarded it as if it were Istanbul again, thus someone neglected to mention this to him.

Carragher and YouTuber Joe Weller had a growing rivalry during the proceedings at the national stadium, which reached a boiling point in the 56th minute of play. Carragher chose to put his studs in Weller’s leg during their battle for the ball, and then he angrily called his opponent a “stupid little p***k” right after.
One of the greatest defenders in Premier League history, Carragher, was not even leaping for the aerial ball when the challenge was made, according to replays of the event. Instead, his eyes were fixed on Weller as he ran his studs down his opponent’s thigh. The second incident that followed was when Weller’s close buddy Theo Baker tried to beat Carragher with a McGeady spin, which was made popular by Republic Ireland player Aide McGeady, and the defender put out an arm at him.
“When he did foul us, he didn’t even say sorry or show an ounce of class,” the YouTuber said in a video responding to the event a few days later, in typical social media flair. What are you doing? Simply mature.
Carragher’s Response to Weller’s Call Out
The defender revealed what he would do differently if he was in the same situation again
When asked about the incident with Weller in a Q&A for Soccer AM’s YouTube channel, the Merseysider responded in classic Carragher fashion, demonstrating that he had no regret for his actions at Wembley. After being questioned about the event by TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods, the former England international said he would do it again if given the chance:
“In the game, he was just bothering me. I had never heard of him, but he was acting like a huge star on the pitch, so I slapped him. He was reportedly a YouTube sensation. In that game, I really enjoyed eating Joe Weller, and I’ll do it again if I have the chance.”
The two haven’t spoken since, but considering that almost ten years have gone by, it’s possible that they don’t think of one another very often, much less that particular instance.
However, the fact that another YouTuber made him look foolish by embarrassing him and Robert Pirès with a stunning display of talent is something that might keep Carragher up at night. That afternoon, ChrisMD (Chris Dixon), a well-known content creator, was also on the opposing squad and used the opportunity to shine brightly.
On the touchline, with the ball bouncing in his direction and the great Arsenal winger Pires pursuing him, Dixon chipped the ball expertly over the Frenchman before using his second touch to do the same to the charging Carragher. The YouTuber later disclosed that Carragher was not quite thrilled with the amazing feat, referring to him as a “f****** little c***” following.
