Micah Richards was a member of the team that Marvin Sordell was a part of while competing for Team Great Britain at the London Olympics.
Now, however, Sordell, who is 34 years old, refers to Richards as his manager, along with fellow Match of the Day pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer.
This is due to the fact that Sordell is a member of the Deportrio team, which competes in the Baller League and is managed by the three.
It was not a team that Sordell had envisioned playing for when he made his debut in the Premier League for Bolton Wanderers in the 2011/12 season. At the time, he was only 20 years old and had just moved from Watford.
It was several months after Sordell joined the Trotters that he was named in Stuart Pearce’s squad for the United States Olympic Games in 2012. If Sordell needed any additional evidence that he was destined for great things in football, this was it.
Sordell participated in the tournament for Team GB on two separate occasions, with one of those appearances being a start.
At first glance, it appeared as though Sordell’s professional life was only going in one direction, and it was certainly not going in a downward direction.
However, just one year later, Sordell reached his breaking point when he disclosed in an interview with The Guardian in 2018 that he had attempted to take his own life.
“There was a time when I attempted to take an excessive amount of tablets,” Sordell said.
“I went to sleep after taking all of these tablets,” she said. The good news is that it did not work.
“I was taken aback and extremely irritated when I awoke. Those who are in that circumstance might say that they experience a sense of being reborn.
“I just thought: ‘What now?'”
Following the unsuccessful attempt at suicide that Sordell made, he continued to play football for a number of years, during which time he was affiliated with Burnley, Colchester United, and Coventry City.
Despite this, the forward continued to struggle with issues related to his mental health, and it was only during his time at Burton Albion that he made his struggles known to the international community.
It was in the year 2017 when Sordell published a poem on Twitter with the title Denis Prose, which is an anagram for the disease known as depression.
In addition to encouraging fans to talk about their own experiences with mental health issues, the poem was instrumental in assisting Sordell in revealing both sides of his consciousness, which included both himself and Denis Prose.
When Sordell was 28 years old, he ultimately made the decision to retire from the sport of football.
During an interview with talkSPORT in 2019, he explained that it was not a difficult decision to make.
“I didn’t enjoy being a professional football player anymore for several reasons,” Sordell explained to reporters.
In addition, I simply had the impression that it was time for me to move on as well. For a considerable amount of time, I have had the impression that I am not going to be one of those players who would continue to play into their mid-to-late thirties years.
“It just felt like the right time for me to move on and step aside, and I’m happy that I didn’t hesitate to do so. Additionally, I am content with moving forward.
I couldn’t be more pleased with what I’ve accomplished. The only way to put it is that I actually lived out my dream. There is no other way to put it.
“When I was a kid, I had the dream of playing football at the professional level, and that was all I knew. This is something that I did, and I also wanted to play for England, so I did that as well.
In September of 2024, Sordell emerged from retirement and joined Kettering Town, a non-league team. Subsequently, he joined Baller League in order to extend his playing days.
FotMob revealed that Sordell was the highest-rated player in Baller League following the first set of matches with a rating of 9.86. This indicated that the 34-year-old player has not lost his touch either.
