Chris Waddle Believes Ben White Should Be Banned From England Call-Up
He believes the Arsenal defender shouldn’t be given a rite of passage for 2026 World Cup
Ben White, who is regarded as one of the Premier League’s top right-backs when healthy, had a tense relationship with former Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland. The issues began during the 2022 World Cup, when Tuchel’s predecessor’s second-in-command scolded the Arsenal star in front of his teammates just before the defender announced his retirement before the knockout stages.
However, a number of well-known figures have weighed in on the controversy surrounding the 27-year-old’s potential return to the Three Lions’ first squad under the nation’s new German manager. Chris Waddle, a former midfielder for Tottenham, Newcastle, and Marseille, is one such person who feels he shouldn’t. According to the Mirror, the 64-year-old told 10bet that he was a part of the 1990 team that, under Bryan Robson’s guidance, advanced to the World Cup semi-finals:
“I would not reintroduce Ben White. “I don’t want to be picked again,” he said. Didn’t he spit the dummy out? He can now play without any problems. He wants to pick and choose his career in England, then?
You would never claim that you would never want to play for England, would you? That is not something I would have said. If I had been fifty, I would have played. Players in the present era who declare, “I’m not being picked, so don’t pick me again,” suddenly become available.
He went on: “I would reply, ‘Well, we’ll give you the same ban,’ because he didn’t want to play during that period. Therefore, I would think about you in two years if it were a year or two. England should never be refused. You won’t be selected if you don’t get along with the management and you don’t like the way the game is played. However, you don’t decline a late call-up.
The Position of Thomas Tuchel on the Subject
The German appears receptive to reintegrating White into the group.
After only four caps for the Three Lions, the Arsenal defender went into self-imposed exile, and it has been two years since White last played for England. However, it currently seems that everyone is amenable to a comeback before the 2026 World Cup.
