“I have returned the Man of the match award to him because he deserved it more than me… He’s the best player I’ve ever played with so far”: David Raya shocked by his Arsenal teammate’s performance against Atalanta yesterday

On Thursday night, Arsenal opened their Champions League campaign with a goalless draw away at Atalanta.

The Gunners performed admirably against the Europa League champions from the previous season, despite appearing to play it safe and not pose much of a danger.

But there was one particularly outstanding performance from an Arsenal player that made a TNT Sports analyst declare it to be among the best he had ever seen.

David Raya’s incredible save for Arsenal vs Atalanta leaves Robbie Savage speechless
The man in question is David Raya, who in the 51st minute of the game in Bergamo performed an absolutely amazing double save.

Mateo Retegui’s penalty was saved by the Arsenal goalkeeper, and Raya was able to save it even though the Atalanta player headed the ball in the direction of the goal.

Robbie Savage immediately bestowed upon the Gunners star one of the highest accolades available to a professional football player in response to a moment of class from the player.

He commented on TNT Sports, via BBC Sport, “I have to say that is one of the best saves I have ever seen.”

“That is very amazing! How does he stand up so fast? Whoa! Among the greatest rescues I’ve ever witnessed!

“It’s a fantastic save from David Raya, but Mateo Retegui needs to score,” Savage continued. Was there any chance Raya could have saved it?

“He headed the rebound back in the direction of the goalie.” Yes, he needs to provide the energy himself, and the save was excellent, but he only has half the goal to go for—a poor miss.

Arsenal won their first-ever match in the redesigned Champions League thanks in large part to Raya’s efforts.
