Harry Amass, a promising prospect for Manchester United, was left out of the matchday roster for the team’s crushing of Barnsley in the Carabao Cup because manager Erik ten Hag believes the young player from Old Trafford isn’t ready for a breakthrough season in the starting lineup, according to GIVEMESPORT sources.
After thrashing their League One rivals 7-0 earlier this week, the Red Devils easily won their largest win since the Dutch tactician took over. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen all claimed braces, and Antony scored from the penalty spot.
Amass was unable to force his way into ten Hag’s plans for the match, despite the fact that Manuel Ugarte was given the chance to make his first start since joining Manchester United in a deal worth up to £50.5 million during the latter stages of the summer transfer window from Paris Saint-Germain.
Amass Needs to Grow More Before Choosing
Red Devils believe that teenagers should get ready for a greater degree of aggressiveness.
According to GMS sources, Amass is not expected to have a breakthrough season at Manchester United this year. Ten Hag is adamant that he needs to keep improving his game before being ready for first-team action, which is why fellow youngster Toby Collyer was selected to start at left-back against Barnsley.
The 17-year-old was kept off the field seven times in the previous season, including during the FA Cup semi-final matchup with Coventry City. However, he is still waiting for his senior debut and will have to wait patiently in the upcoming months as he is not the Red Devils’ top priority even with Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw still out with injuries.
While the Manchester United supporters were taken aback by Amass’s exclusion from the matchday roster when Barnsley visited Old Trafford, GMS sources have learned that there is a belief within the organization that he requires additional time to acclimate to the intensity of competition, pressure, and expectation.
The dynamic left-sided full-back participated in the first team during a respectable preseason. However, since the season began, the only games he has played in are for the Red Devils under-21 squad, where he recorded an assist in a Bristol Street Motors Trophy victory over Barnsley.
As GMS previously reported, Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox was keen to see if players like Amass should be considered first-team squad members during the final stages of the previous season. However, ten Hag made the decision to pursue European qualification and FA Cup glory in a different direction.
