During the goalless draw at Brentford, Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged that he was taken aback by the fact that his Brighton team did not receive a penalty.
In first-half injury time, Andy Madley looked at the pitchside monitor after Lewis Dunk seemed to be pulled down in the box by Yoane Wissa.
But the referee determined that Dunk initiated the contact, so there was no penalty assessed.
“I have never seen a referee go to watch VAR and not give a penalty,” De Zerbi said in an interview with BBC Match of the Day. However, I’m sure he looked good.”
Wednesday night’s dull 0-0 draw between Brighton and West Ham prevented Brighton from moving up in the race for Europe (April 3).
Despite being without Ansu Fati and Evan Ferguson, Albion was ultimately helpless in front of goal on a frustrating night, despite the return of top scorer Joao Pedro.
The game’s two best opportunities fell to substitute Danny Welbeck, who was unable to convert them as time ran out.
De Zerbi commented on the team’s performance, saying: “Yeah, I had a great time watching my players and team today. We put in a lot of effort to win the game, but I think we can win a lot more if we play well and perform like this.”
He continued, “We played very well, we were unlucky, and we deserved to win,” in an interview with TNT Sports. We knew the level of difficulty because they shot thirty times in their last game against Manchester United.
“We performed better, particularly in the second half when we had numerous opportunities to score. However, we are not dissatisfied with the performance today.
“We lost two points, if we analyse the table, but if we analyse the performance we are happy.”
