The quality of Cole Palmer has “surprised” Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier, who trained with the Chelsea star for the first time.

Ahead of the Three Lions’ forthcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Iceland—the last two games Gareth Southgate’s team will play before the European Championships—the two are currently serving as England’s international players.

Palmer was included in England coach Gareth Southgate’s preliminary squad for the competition in Germany, and it is probable that he will be included in the final 26-man roster, which needs to be finalized by June 7.

Palmer has made a good impression in the most recent England camp, and Trippier is absolutely taken aback by his class. The Newcastle right-back gave talkSPORT an explanation for why this was the case, saying, “It’s the first time I’ve trained with Cole, and he’s really surprised me—a top-quality player.”

It’s just a matter of how he locates the gaps. His understanding of others’ whereabouts and his remarkable intelligence at such a young age. This week is my first time training with him, and I’m really glad I did because he’s been excellent.

Trippier is not alone in being amazed by the 22-year-old’s skill; Cesc Fabregas, a former Chelsea midfielder, feels the same way.

“Last summer, I was performing in the Champions League final,” I recall. The Spaniard told BBC Sport, “He was just warming up there, being one of these young players coming up, enjoying the experience, not really being selected or looked at to feature in the game.”

And then—all of a sudden—a significant transfer to Chelsea. He begins to perform with great quality, personality, and skill at an extremely high level. He makes things happen—the final pass, the goal—and he wants the ball.

“The relocation to Chelsea caught me off guard. I must admit that I’m quite impressed. I didn’t anticipate this kind of impact, and he has unquestionably been Chelsea’s player of the year.”

Palmer had a season in which he scored 27 goals and assisted his teammates on 15 occasions, earning him the titles of PFA Young Player of the Year and Chelsea Player of the Year.
