Heartbroken Greg Docherty pays tribute as Charlton Athletic fan dies during match vs Portsmouth.

The Championship match was stopped after 12 minutes and then abandoned due to a medical emergency at The Valley.

Former Rangers and Hamilton midfielder Greg Docherty has paid homage to a Charlton Athletic supporter who died during their Championship match against Portsmouth, forcing the game to be abandoned.


The south London club revealed the terrible news that a supporter died after suffering a medical emergency during their match versus Pompey. The match in The Valley was called off after only 12 minutes after spectators notified officials and players to the situation.



Medical assistance was offered promptly, and the game was eventually called off around 45 minutes later. Ex-Scotland Under-21 international Docherty, who was on the bench at The Valley, told X: “Absolutely devastating news.” From all of the club’s players, our thoughts are with his family and friends during this terribly difficult time.




Earlier, the Championship team released a statement announcing the fan’s death. The statement reads: “The club is devastated to announce that a Charlton Athletic supporter died as a result of a medical incident during today’s game at The Valley against Portsmouth.


“The match was delayed in the 12th minute to allow the supporter to be treated and was later postponed. The club would want to thank the Charlton personnel and emergency responders for their efforts, however the supporter died later in the hospital.



The club thanks the supporters in attendance, as well as the Portsmouth players and staff, for their patience and understanding as the tragedy unfolded. Everyone at the club offers heartfelt sympathies to the supporter’s family and friends during this extremely sad period.”


Portsmouth Football Club responded: “We are devastated to discover that the Charlton supporter who became ill during today’s game has passed tragically. Our thoughts and condolences are with their family and friends during this difficult time.

The match was called off with the score at 0-0, and will be rescheduled for a later date.
