The renowned French striker and former Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema recently spoke about the reasons he left the team in the summer of 2023. There was much surprise and conjecture around Benzema’s departure following a stellar 14-year stint. He discussed the reasons behind his choice in an open interview.
Benzema stated how much he wanted to end his Real Madrid career with a bang. “I never wanted to play against Real Madrid, and I wanted to leave at the top,” he said. This statement highlights how much he loves and respects the team, and how reluctant he is to ever play against the one that has been his home for more than ten years.
“The first person I called when I decided to leave Real Madrid was Florentino Pérez,” Benzema disclosed, referring to his chat with the president of Real Madrid. He wasn’t really sure he understood. I informed him that Vinicius and Rodrygo, the youthful stars, were prepared. This demonstrates his faith in the club’s up-and-coming players and his conviction that the time was right for them to take on more responsibility.
“When the football project started in Saudi Arabia, it seemed huge in all aspects,” Benzema said in reference to his relocation to the country. I wanted to take part and contribute to the advancement of football in this nation. “As a Muslim, you feel at peace when you are in Mecca,” he added, highlighting the cultural and religious connection he experienced. It is a unique location. The nation of Saudi Arabia is Muslim. They embraced me warmly, and I instantly felt loved.
Conflicts with the coach, supporters, or any other member of the Real Madrid team had no bearing on Benzema’s decision to leave the team. His choice was motivated by a mix of his own goals, consideration for the club’s future, and the desire to support Saudi Arabia’s emerging football scene. Benzema continues his legacy as he starts this new chapter with Al-Ittihad, leaving behind a club he cherishes and welcoming the challenges that lie ahead.
