One of the most famous players in England is Harry Maguire, but few people are aware that the centre back for Manchester United and the Three Lions was born under a different name.

Harry Maguire, the defender for Manchester United and England, is well-known, yet it turns out that ‘Harry’ isn’t his real name.

Maguire, 31, was an important member of Gareth Southgate’s team in the World Cup 2018, Euro 2020, and World Cup 2022. Throughout all three tournaments, he was a fan favourite of the Three Lions thanks to his strong defensive play and affinity for huge headers.

However, when he was born in March 1993, his parents Alan and Zoe gave him the name Jacob. The centre defender has really gone by Harry since he was a little child.

It is still unknown why Maguire chose to go by his middle name rather than his first. Furthermore, it doesn’t seem to be related to any family members who also have the name Jacob.

Strangely, Joe and Laurence, the siblings of the former Leicester City and Hull City star, continue to go by their given names. However, Maguire is not the only England player who uses a name other than the one given to them at birth.

England’s top ranking Before Jordan Pickford’s father decided to change it to avoid embarrassing him, his last name was Pigford. Furthermore, Charles Joseph John Hart Hart was the real name of former shot stopper Joe Hart, who won 75 caps between 2008 and 2017.

Unlike Maguire, the BBC Euro 2024 commentator has a simpler explanation for using his middle name: ‘Joe’ serves as a means of distinguishing him from his father, who also goes by Charles.

It seems absurd to refer to either player as Charles or Jacob at this point. Maguire’s teammates, who have jokingly called him “Slabhead” and “Dennis the Menace,” concur.

Despite missing United’s final five games of the 2023–24 season, Maguire was named in England’s initial 33-man team for Euro 2024 because Southgate valued his crucial tournament experience. But because of a persistent calf issue, he was severely unhappy to not make the final team.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,” Maguire posted on social media. I’m doing my hardest, but I can’t seem to get over a calf ailment.

“Perhaps in an attempt to succeed, I overexerted myself. I am just really devastated. Being an England representative is, for me, the ultimate honour. To me, it is everything.

“Like the rest of the nation, I will cheer for the squad as a fan if I am unable to contribute as a player. Boys, go win it. In order to get ready for the upcoming season, I will then go back under the direction of the Manchester United medical staff.”
