Manchester United will consider bids for Harry Maguire during the January transfer window, as the club hopes to recuperate a sum for the England defender before his contract ends in June.
“It’s smart from United to take stock and when you’ve got a manager at the helm who’s indifferent, you might really fancy another manager to come in and they might want another striker.”
“Then you’ve got to get another player out to get another one in so it’s smart business but if I was Manchester United and had the job tomorrow, I would’ve said “I need Ivan Toney” and I would’ve made it happen.”
United has already spent £108.5 million on strikers.
Over the previous two summer transfer windows, the Red Devils spent £72 million on Rasmus Hojlund and £36.5 million on Joshua Zirkzee, raising the question of whether there is place in the roster for someone like Toney.
However, it is fair to argue that Hojlund and Zirkzee lack the experience and ruthlessness in front of goal that the former Brentford star has.
Ten Hag’s side has struggled to score goals.
United have only scored 5 goals in their first 7 league games, indicating that they are struggling to hit the back of the net.
It is not an issue exclusive to this season. The Manchester club struggled to score goals previous season, finishing with a goal differential of -1. You can’t compete for a top four slot, let alone a title, with that kind of record.
If their goal-scoring difficulties continue, they may need to consider adding another No. 9. It’s unclear whether Toney will be targeted.
