During a Brazilian futsal competition, a goalie sadly collapsed and passed away seconds after using his chest to save a penalty to win the match. Playing for the amateur team Sind Motos, 34-year-old Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa made every effort to block the strong shot.
On a live web feed, he was seen tumbling to the ground while attempting to give a jubilant teammate a high five. Officials and other players called for medical help right away, but after several unsuccessful attempts to resuscitate him, he was declared dead, according to talkSPORT.
In the northern Brazilian state of Para, the tragedy happened during a five-a-side futsal competition at a gym in the community of Augusto Correa. He was participating in an amateur competition held to commemorate Brazil’s independence from Portugal more than 200 years ago. His family and friends called him “Pixe.”
A statement was released after the goalie passed away shortly after making a penalty save.
Alongside a black ribbon portrait of Antonio (see their Instagram post below), the Para Futsal Federation released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened by the news of Antonio Edson dos Santos Sousa’s loss. He was an athlete who distinguished his career with brilliance, devotion, and teamwork.
Both on and off the court, his presence will never be forgotten for the exceptional player he was but also for the unique individual who enthralled everyone. We send our sincere sympathies to his family, friends, and the whole sports world during this difficult time.
“May they take solace in happy recollections and the knowledge that Antonio Edson leaves a legacy of futsal inspiration and fervour.”

In response to the goalie’s passing, games were halted the next day. Whether the ball’s impact contributed to the catastrophe is yet unknown. Another Brazilian futsal player, Roberto Peterson, 33, was hit by the ball during a competition in the southern state of Santa Catarina in June and died as a result. After being struck in the abdomen, the married father of three suffered a heart attack.
In the indoor five-a-side sport of futsal, balls are frequently hit at great speeds from close range, necessitating precise technical proficiency in confined quarters. Popular in South America, Spain, and Portugal, Brazil is the current holder and a six-time World Cup champion. In the 2024 FIFA tournament, they defeated Argentina in Uzbekistan.
