German Media React to Harry Kane’s Performance in Bayern Munich 2-2 Borussia Dortmund

With the Bayern Munich striker still scoring goals for both club and country this season, Harry Kane is one of the names that have been floated in the 2025 Ballon d’Or competition. The England attacker, who has scored 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga team, doesn’t appear to be slowing down in his 30s.

His most recent appearance was in the 2-2 home tie between rivals Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. The Bavarians came from behind to take the lead in a thrilling match of Der Klassiker, but they were pegged back and were unable to maintain their advantage at the top of the German top division after Bayer Leverkusen drew that same day.

Before goals from Raphael Guerreiro and Serge Gnabry reversed the tide in Vincent Kompany’s team’s favour, Maximilian Beier startled the Allianz Arena into quiet with a header early in the second half to give the visitors a shocking lead. After a fumble in the Bayern penalty area, defender Waldemar Anton saved a point for the opposition, tying the score.

Harry Kane’s performance against Borussia Dortmund in the Der Klassiker
The striker put forth a great deal of effort, but failed to deliver.

Instead of waiting for an opportunity within the 18-yard box, Kane played his typical game against Dortmund, frequently dropping deep to try and be involved in the build-up. However, he failed to convert from any of his six shots (two off target, four on target), indicating that his clinical demeanour was a little off that day.

Two of these chances were categorised as big chances by SofaScore, which the England striker would typically score nine times out of ten. After striking the woodwork, he did get painfully close, but it was in vain.

Kane’s typically flawless ball-handling skills were lacking on this particular day; the center-forward only completed 19 of his 28 attempted passes and lost the ball 13 times overall. With a success record of only 68%, he was not regularly finding a teammate.

German Media Label Kane ‘Ineffective’ in Bayern Munich Draw

‘Pretty much out of the game’

Kane tried his hardest, but his performance wasn’t well received by German media. He received only a four-star rating from Focus Online, which also stated that “The goalscorer was pretty much out of the game.”

SPORT1 agreed with the assessment and rated Kane a four as well. “He had a few chances and half-chances in the second half, but no luck,” the publication added. The Englishman didn’t have a good night.

During the dramatic draw, Bild, one of Germany’s largest media sites, called the 31-year-old “ineffective.” The view was followed with yet another 4/10 rating:

“In the first half, he had several opportunities to score, such as in stoppage time. He was useless in front of goal, though, and overall contributed less to Munich’s offensive play than normal.

When evaluating Kane’s performance at the Allianz Arena, Merkur adopted a different strategy. “Before the match, he was tied with Serhou Guirassy for the most Bundesliga goals this calendar year (9)” the news site wrote, highlighting his impressive season. They then wasted his chances, implying that he was simply unlucky.
