Gavi Reacts to Espanyol Spoiling Barcelona La Liga Celebrations With Sprinklers

Gavi’s response to Espanyol turning on the sprinklers to ruin Barcelona’s victory celebrations has gone viral. On Thursday night, Hansi Flick’s team defeated their local Catalan rivals 1-0 to secure their 28th La Liga title, and once again, it was a brilliant goal from Lamine Yamal that made the difference.

Barcelona’s title celebrations were marred by irate neighbours who, despite decades of witnessing Barcelona’s supremacy, still don’t seem to accept it. The victory occurred under quite different circumstances than Barcelona is used to. Barcelona had to moderate their domestic treble celebrations on midweek after winning the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup earlier this season.

In an attempt to prevent a recurrence of the mayhem that followed their most recent championship victory on Espanyol’s patch in 2023, Hansi Flick acted quickly to restore order, rushing up to a jubilant squad and leading them down the tunnel when the full-time whistle blew. This occurred following a terrible incident that occurred prior to kickoff, in which a car crashed into a group of spectators outside the stadium, tainting what should have been a festive evening.

Gavi’s Response To Epsanyol Turning On The Sprinklers

The young Spaniard lapped up the chance to sing in the rain

It’s likely that every football player, regardless of age or skill level, will declare that rain is the best weather for playing the beautiful game. Sliding tackles are more common, the ball zips over the surface more quickly, and there’s something a little more mystical about celebrating in the rain.

Gavi confirmed how much players enjoy singing in the rain when Espanyol turned on the sprinklers at full time in an effort to literally dampen Barcelona’s celebrations. Watch the interview and incident below to hear what he had to say in the mixed zone:

“No, I thought it was better. This allowed us to rejoice more effectively.

As expected, Espanyol’s measures failed to diffuse the situation. Rather, Flick was the one who successfully subdued Barcelona’s festivities. The 60-year-old was determined to make sure the 28-time Spanish champions showed some deference, keeping in mind the long-standing hostility between the two Catalan rivals.

The celebration most likely resumed behind closed doors, but Yamal, the goal scorer, seemed to be the first—and possibly only—player to follow his manager’s instructions right away. Online footage showed the teenager leaving the pitch quickly after winning his first big club award since graduating from La Masia in 2023.
