After being declared “seriously ill” in the hospital earlier, Liverpool great Alan Hansen is now on the road to recovery. Now that he’s back at home, Gary Lineker has texted him following a text from the former defender’s spouse.

Through the Liverpool website, the Hansen family issued a statement announcing the Scot’s discharge from the hospital and thanked everyone for their support. And former Match of the Day coworker Lineker discussed the recent incident on The Rest Is Football.

Regretfully, Lineker had been informed that Hansen’s death was due to be announced and that he had been invited to discuss it on the show by an unidentified individual. He claimed that this was the moment he “broke down” in an interview with Alan Shearer.

Luckily, that turned out to be too soon. In communication with the family, Lineker described how he was informed that Hansen would be released from the hospital:

“I got a text message yesterday from Janet Hansen, Alan’s wife, saying that he’d been discharged from hospital, that he’d gone home,” stated Lineker. “I also noticed that Liverpool had tweeted the exact same thing. How incredible is this news?”

Shearer agreed with that. Making getting back home in time for the Scotland game, he said, was characteristic of Hansen:

“It was fantastic, wasn’t it? It was a terrific way to start the day when you told us at breakfast that you got a text message.

“As usual, Mr. Hansen planned everything perfectly to watch his side play at home, but regrettably, they fell short of his expectations. But it’s wonderful to hear that he’s recovering and returning home.”

Lineker also sent Hansen a note, saying, “This is wonderful news. I hope, Al, that you’re listening. Yes, excellent work. Congratulations, buddy. It’s wonderful to have you rejoin us.
