Chelsea were the football world’s enemies over the weekend as they defeated a tenacious Wrexham side in the FA Cup fifth round, requiring extra time to do it.
The Blues were second best for much of the 90 minutes, but Josh Acheampong’s goal sent them into extra time against ten men.
From here, Alejandro Garnacho and Joao Pedro scored, with the latter’s introduction being the decisive factor in the game.
Gary Lineker wants FA Cup ties to move directly to penalties following Chelsea versus Wrexham.
Having further 30 minutes to play was the deciding factor for the Championship side, though Gary Lineker has stated he would want to see a rule change in the league as a result.
He told ‘The Rest is Football’ that he would want to see FA Cup ties move directly to penalties if they are still tied after 90 minutes.

He replied: “Yeah. I mean, extra time in these FA Cup matches. I always think, “Just go straight to penalties.”
“Especially when you’re broadcasting, since obviously time is ticking, and you only go home at a certain moment. In general, extra time, you know, it did straighten it out, obviously, in the Wrexham vs Chelsea game, which we’ll get to later. But I’m not sure about extra time.
Alan Shearer, who provided commentary for Chelsea’s game, agreed, saying: “I’m about the same, especially with all the games and everything else going on. And, certainly, I’d be in favor of going right to penalties.
“I also think it gives the smaller clubs a little bit more of a chance.”
There was also criticism of VAR’s use since it helped Chelsea. George Dobson was sent off after VAR intervention, while Lewis Brunt’s score was disallowed due to a narrow offside.
Chelsea are big favourites for another Wembley visit.
Chelsea’s victory over Wrexham has earned them a quarter-final tie against Port Vale at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues are bottom of League One and face the lowest-ranked team remaining in the league, escaping Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool.
Liam Rosenior will ensure that his team does not underestimate the challenge ahead of them, but they should be confident in their ability to get to the semi-finals.
Despite his recent appointment, the manager will be under pressure to provide results right away, and winning a trophy in his first season will be an excellent way to respond to his early critics.
