Fresh Birmingham City update – Tommy Doyle transfer news emerges as Rob Edwards provides the latest on the club’s financial situation.

Despite being expected to have a successful first season back in the Championship, Birmingham City’s chances of making the play-offs for the first time since 2012 were all but over before the international break.

Last season’s League One champions have backed up what was an obscene spend by third-tier standards last season across both windows this season, with 14 new players joining B9 in the summer, before Davies was able to conduct a squad reshuffle in January, replacing multiple fringe players with the likes of Ibrahim Osman, Jhon Solis, August Priske, and Carlos Vicente.

However, it is a bet that has yet to pay off, with many Blues fans divided about whether Davies will be allowed to supervise a third season in command as the team strives for a return to the Premier League.

As a result, it remains to be seen whether present members of the St. Andrew’s side will be moved on in the forthcoming window, as speculation about a few players’ departures lingers.

That being said, a new update has been provided on the future of Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Tommy Doyle, which supporters may have expected considering recent results.

Tommy Doyle is anticipated to return to Wolverhampton Wanderers following Birmingham City’s obligation clause.

Doyle has established himself as a ‘household name’ in the Championship at this point in his career, following loan spells with Cardiff City and Sheffield United during his breakout years at Manchester City.

Following an initial loan move to his current club, Gary O’Neil signed the 24-year-old on a permanent basis for £4.3 million in 2024 when Wolves exercised an option to buy the agreement.

However, after former Wanderers manager Vitor Pereira claimed that the midfielder lacked the physicality needed to play in the Premier League week in and week out, the Blues were able to stave off competition for his services in July, with many believing it was a statement move.

With Birmingham’s ambition well-documented, it was claimed that Doyle would join Davies’ team permanently for £10 million this summer if the club secured back-to-back promotions.

However, with those hopes effectively dashed following the continuation of the club’s on-pitch inconsistencies, it has been described as ‘inevitable’ that the Mancunian, who has three assists in 34 league appearances for Blues, will return to Molineux as Wolves prepare for their own Championship rebuild under Rob Edwards.

Davies previously stated that the ex-England youth international’s future was “open,” but this does not appear to be the case any longer.

Rob Edwards’ view on Tommy Doyle amid a new Wolves and Birmingham City update

Edwards is said to be a great fan of Doyle as a player, so it would not be surprising if the midfielder became a vital part of the first-team plans in what will be the Old Gold and Black’s first Championship season in eight years.

Despite such adulation, Birmingham’s local rivals are anticipated to lose one or both of Andre and Joao Gomes following their impending relegation, with Manchester United and Liverpool expressing an interest.

However, as with most Blues arrivals this season, the aforementioned mandatory condition in Doyle’s loan was a major gamble that did not pay off, and they may have to look elsewhere for midfield options next season.
