French media make their feelings clear on Marcus Rashford following Aston Villa’s damaging defeat to PSG

After Aston Villa’s Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain, the French media have spoken their opinions about Marcus Rashford.

Aston Villa lost the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal to French champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Parcs des Prices.

Unai Emery’s ambitions of leading Villa to the semi-finals are severely damaged by the outcome, since they will need to overcome the two-goal deficit in the second leg at Villa Park the following week.

However, it’s evident that the French media aren’t very worried about their team’s prospects of moving further because their coverage of the game has clearly condemned winger Rashford and a number of other Villa players.

Popular French publication L’Equipe posts player evaluations for both teams in the game following every PSG game. These ratings have gained notoriety online for their savage candour.

And after Wednesday’s Champions League action, this honesty was evident as the publication gave two Villa players brutal 3/10 scores.

Jacob Ramsey and Matty Cash were singled out by the French media, which rated them lower than any other player in the game and called them the worst players on the field.

“The right-back had obviously been targeted as the weak point in Villa’s defence,” L’Equipe said in reference to Cash’s performance. And with good reason. He was unable to win a battle and had symptoms of uneasiness with the ball, struggling from kickoff until his exit.

Despite replacing Oliie Watkins in the starting lineup, Rashford failed to impress, and the newspaper evidently felt the same way, assigning him a grade of 4/10.

The former Manchester United player received a 3/10 rating from France’s 90min, who went one step further and wrote: “The English striker had an odd start and was unavailable for 25 minutes. Waves of Parisian assaults befell his squad, and he contributed little.

Despite his initial awkwardness, he was able to execute a number of crucial technical manoeuvres. The English striker was alone and made poor decisions with the ball at his feet in his second half, which was by no means particularly noteworthy.

Rashford had a 4.5/10 from Footmercato, who noted that Rashford had a “very difficult” encounter in Paris.
