Frank Lampard, Coventry City’s manager, has highlighted what his team lacked in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton at the CBS Arena.
Despite their defeat against the Saints, the Sky Blues remain top of the Championship standings, but they need to win again with only eight games remaining.
Lampard’s side is seven points ahead of second-place Middlesbrough, which failed to capitalise on Coventry’s loss, drew 1-1 with Bristol City.
The Sky Blues head to Swansea City on Saturday, and a win would be their fourth consecutive away triumph.
Frank Lampard identifies two characteristics Coventry City lacked in their defeat to Southampton.

Coventry began 2026 in terrible form, raising concerns about supporters that they would be beaten to the Championship title by Middlesbrough and may even drop out of the automatic promotion slots.
However, the Sky Blues went on a seven-game unbeaten streak, including six victories, before losing to Southampton on Saturday.
Furthermore, second-place Boro have won just two of their previous seven Championship games, allowing Coventry to tighten their grip on the title.
Following his team’s defeat against Southampton, Lampard told the Coventry Observer, “We usually have more energy and variation in our game.”We are not pleased with the goals we conceded. “You can’t get that wrong because you won’t win games of football. We weren’t clinical at the top end.”In the end, we almost had a draw because these boys won’t stop and go to the end. Were we up to our own standards? No, but that is football at this point in the season; you simply want to achieve a result.”
Southampton had a 2-0 lead in the second half owing to goals from Flynn Downes and Kuryu Matsuki, however Coventry fought back in the 92nd minute with a penalty from Victor Torp.
The Saints are now just three points behind sixth-place Wrexham after an incredible 10-game unbeaten run in the Championship, which included victories over Watford and Leicester City.
Tonda Eckert has effectively revived Southampton’s chances of returning to the Premier League immediately, following a disappointing start to the season under former manager Will Still.
Coventry City must avoid the recent pattern following Southampton’s setback during the Championship title chase.

Coventry’s defeat against Southampton has not harmed their Championship title aspirations, given to Middlesbrough’s current dismal form.
However, when the Sky Blues have suffered rare defeats in recent months, they have struggled to quickly recover.
For example, Lampard’s side lost 2-0 to Ipswich Town on December 29 and did not win again until January 17, drawing 1-1 with Charlton Athletic in the Championship before losing to Birmingham City and Stoke City in the second tier and FA Cup, respectively.
On January 31, Coventry suffered a 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers, following their 2-1 loss to Norwich City.
It is critical that the Sky Blues avoid that pattern now that they have been defeated by Southampton, especially if Middlesbrough return to winning ways at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
