Coventry City returned to the top of the EFL Championship table on Monday night with a 3-1 victory over championship rivals Middlesbrough, but head coach Frank Lampard has advised his team not to get carried away just yet.
when spending the bulk of the season in first place, Coventry fell to second place, momentarily being replaced by Middlesbrough’s Kim Hellberg when the Sky Blues experienced an unusual decrease in form.
Coventry defeated Boro 4-2 in the reverse fixture at The Riverside, and they were hoping to inflict similar damage on Monday night at the CBS Arena.
Indeed, Riley McGree’s goal was cancelled out by Haji Wright’s hat-trick, securing a 3-1 victory for Lampard’s side and all three points, as they overtook their opponents.
However, despite what may be a season-defining victory for the Sky Blues, Lampard has advised his team not to relax just yet, as the job is far from finished.
Frank Lampard has warned his Coventry City side not to ‘lull’ following their victory against Middlesbrough.

Monday night’s 3-1 victory over Boro could prove to be a watershed moment in Coventry’s season, providing the Sky Blues with a platform to continue their strong form and secure automatic promotion.
This result takes Coventry to the top of the table by one point with 14 games remaining, with the fight for automatic promotion heating up as Millwall, Ipswich Town, and Hull City all close behind.
Though Lampard was quick to give a message to his team following the victory in his post-match interview, asking them to be focused and reminding them that their goal is far from secured, and if they don’t go out and back up this latest win, it may mean nothing in the larger scheme of things.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Lampard said, “We spoke a little before about that there’s been some nerves recently through the club, and I think maybe we haven’t been in this position for a long time, so maybe it’s normal, maybe this was a little check for everybody, maybe not the worst check – this is football.
“As long as we react in the same way we played. As I said, to a man, the intensity, the output of the game, which it had to be, was enormous, and I’m overjoyed for the guys.
“But we can’t rejoice too much since it’s the championship, right? If we go now and take a break, this won’t matter as much, so that’s the message following that one.
Prior to Monday’s triumph over Middlesbrough, Coventry had won only two of their previous eight league games, which they will now hope was a blip in what will be a historic season for the club.
To go up automatically, a team cannot have too many dismal runs of form, as Coventry did. Lampard, of all people, will be well aware of what it takes to win a title during his time at Chelsea, and he will be hoping that his team now has the confidence and belief it needs to win the league.
Coventry City had no time for complacency after Middlesbrough’s triumph.

Coventry’s title campaign begins today, as they must give it their all with 14 games remaining to attain their ultimate goal.
A victory like theirs over Middlesbrough could lead to complacency in their performances, but Lampard has been eager to point out that this will not happen in his interview.
The Sky Blues face two difficult away journeys to West Brom and Sheffield United next, followed by a home game against Stoke City and former manager Mark Robins at the end of the month.
Robins was only a penalty shootout away from guiding Coventry from League Two to the Premier League.
Lampard will be trying to do what Robins couldn’t and lead Coventry to the Premier League, but he must ensure that his message reaches his side in order to give them the best chance of progressing and reaching their goal.
