Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, was able to take one of their most significant scalps of the season thanks to a hat-trick delivered by Haji Wright.
It was at the Coventry Building Society Arena that the Sky Blues were able to secure a resounding 3-0 victory over Sunderland, who were in fourth place, thanks to the three goals scored by the American international.
Wright scored twice in the first half, including taking a penalty kick, and then finished off his hat trick in the 73rd minute, bringing his total number of goals scored in the league to ten from 19 games played.
As a result of Lampard’s team’s dominating performance, Sunderland was subjected to a total of 21 shots, five of which were actually on target.
The defeat, which was unfortunate for the Black Cats, ensured that an alarming run would continue for at least one more season.
The Black Cats have not been victorious in any of their previous eleven league matches played at Coventry, as they have drawn five of those matches and now lost six of them.
As for Sunderland’s most recent victory away from home against Coventry, it occurred in April of 1985, when the two teams were competing in the English Premier League.
The victory was a much-needed return to form for Coventry, which had previously suffered a defeat at the hands of Derby County by a score of 2-0 in their most recent Championship match.
Lampard’s team is currently in fifth place with 59 points, two points ahead of West Bromwich Albion and Bristol City, who are currently in sixth and seventh place, respectively. The victory also ensured that Lampard’s team remained in the running for the play-offs.
In spite of the fact that the Sky Blues are still ten points behind Sunderland, who are in fourth place, the Black Cats will be anxiously looking over their shoulders if they score their sixth win in their last seven matches.
Since Lampard took over as manager for the first time in November of last year, the Coventry Building Society Arena has significantly transformed into a stronghold for the club.
In their thirteen home games, the Sky Blues have only suffered two defeats, and one of those defeats came in the FA Cup against Ipswich Town, a team from the Premier League.
