Frank Lampard confirms Coventry City player boost ahead of Sheffield Wednesday clash

Coventry City moved closer to the Premier League on Easter Monday, despite losing points to fellow top-six side Hull City.

Other results have left Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough, and Millwall all 72 points behind the Sky Blues, who lead by 12 points.

With only five games left, Frank Lampard’s team could mathematically secure promotion on Saturday when they visit bottom club Sheffield Wednesday, or at worst, move within a point of it.

Four points in the last five games appear unavoidable for Coventry, given their ruthless run since that critical win over Middlesbrough in February, which saw them reclaim their place atop the Championship. Including that, Frank Lampard’s side has won eight of their past ten league games.

However, those at CBS Arena will want to ensure that they have the greatest possible squad available throughout the run-in to avoid losing their seemingly unassailable position.

Frank Lampard offers a positive double injury update.

Coventry and Hull drew 0-0 for the second time this season on Easter Monday, in an unusual slog for Frank Lampard’s free-scoring Sky Blues.

The surface at the MKM Stadium wasn’t ideal for the Coventry manager, but Lampard also had to deal with the absence of two crucial players, Bobby Thomas and Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Thomas-Asante, who scored his 12th goal of the season in a 3-0 away win over Swansea City before the Easter Weekend, was absent on both Good Friday and last night, while crucial centre-back Thomas missed the draw at Hull after playing 90 minutes against Derby County on Good Friday.

Following the goalless draw in East Yorkshire, Lampard stated that both players should be available for the upcoming meeting against Sheffield Wednesday.Bobby was battling to recuperate from a shin injury and tiredness during the turnaround, but the Coventry manager assured him that he would be fine.Brandon has a little hamstring, and with a player like him, you must be extremely cautious. We’ll perform some testing this week to push him to his limits, and if he passes, he’ll be engaged on Saturday.”

Thomas-Asante, in particular, has struggled with injuries throughout the season. A similar hamstring ailment caused him to miss the whole Christmas season earlier this year. At the time, he led the Championship in scoring with 10 goals in 17 games.

Now that he’s regaining form, having scored twice in his previous three games, another lengthy layoff would be another sad twist in the 27-year-old’s season. Fortunately, that does not appear to be the case with him or Thomas.

Coventry City are closing in on the Premier League, and a double injury boost will almost certainly help them get there.

Coventry’s return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2000/01 season is all but certain.

It could be done this weekend, but only if a Sky Blues victory against already relegated Sheffield Wednesday is combined with Middlesbrough and Millwall losses to Portsmouth and West Brom.

Frank Lampard’s side will most likely win even without Thomas or Thomas-Asante between now and the conclusion of the season, but their contributions will undoubtedly give the rest of the team a boost heading into the final five games.

The Sky Blues duo have played an important role in getting them within touching distance of the top flight, so it’s only natural that they’ll be able to help finish the job in the coming weeks.
