Former Premier League boss sacked as manager of EFL club after less than a year in charge

With Cambridge United in danger of being relegated to League Two, Garry Monk was fired.

Despite only been hired in March 2024, the 45-year-old hasn’t had a significant influence in his 11 months as Abbey Stadium’s dugout.

There was optimism that the former Swansea boss may aim for a top half finish this season after leading the U’s to 18th place the previous one.

Instead, after losing 18 of their 31 games, Cambridge is in a dreadful 24th place in League One.

Additionally, the decision has been made to cut ties with the 2013 League Cup winner after Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Exeter.

“We would like to thank Garry for his hard work and commitment to Cambridge United over the last 12 months,” said a statement from Paul Barry, the main owner of Cambridge.

“During his time with us, he truly embraced the club, and we are all quite unhappy that things have not turned out the way we had intended.

“As we wrap up the first section of our football review, the table ultimately does not lie and now is the appropriate time to make a change.

“With 15 games left in the season, we need to keep fighting as a team to maintain our League One standing in the upcoming weeks.

“We will also utilise this time to tactically plan for the football team’s upcoming chapter.

“We will say more about this in the week.”

Monk’s first managerial position was in February 2014, when he temporarily took over Swansea, a Premier League team at the time, after Michael Laudrup was fired.

After leading the Swans to survival with one game remaining, he was eventually hired on a permanent basis.

And Monk was considered one of the game’s most promising new managers after taking home the Premier League’s Manager of the Month Award in August.

However, Monk was fired by the Welsh team five months after agreeing to a three-year contract in July 2015 after they lost 11 of their 11 top-flight games, dropping them to 15th place.

Since then, Monk has not led a club for more than 18 months, and his 77 games as manager of the Swans is the most he has ever managed a single team.

He joined Leeds in June 2016 after leaving Swansea, but he left at the end of the season when the Whites placed seventh in the Championship.

He returned to England’s second division to take over at Middlesbrough after a year out, although he only stayed for six months, winning just 12 of his 26 games.

Monk’s next club was Birmingham, however after 13 months in charge and a Championship finish of 17th, he was fired in June 2019.

Additionally, Monk’s final position before joining Cambridge was with Sheffield Wednesday, a Championship team.

However, similar to his previous clubs, he didn’t stay long; after 13 months with the Owls, who finished 23rd in the standings, his contract was terminated in November 2019.
