After their historic victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, Newcastle United will give a former player a Carabao Cup winners’ medal even though he left the team. At Wembley Stadium, the Magpies won 2-1 thanks to goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak just before halftime.
Arne Slot outcast Federico Chiesa pulled one back in Liverpool’s late charge, ensuring up a nervous finish, but Eddie Howe’s team held firm to win Newcastle’s first major trophy in 70 years and guarantee them a spot in Europe the following season. After leading the squad up the famous Wembley steps with an emotional Bruno Guimaraes, captains Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles raised the trophy.
The result was a night of festivities that Newcastle fans from all over the northeast to London would never forget. One former Magpie, who is considered a cult figure in some Geordie homes, has not yet joined in the celebrations but is anticipated to do so shortly.
Miguel Almiron Set To Receive Carabao Cup WInners’ Medal
The Paraguayan returned to the MLS after a six-year spell in January
Miguel Almiron is about to receive a medal, according to ESPN reporter Roberto Rojas. That is even though, following a six-year stint with Newcastle, the Paraguayan rejoined Atlanta United in the MLS in January. Before departing, he participated in four Carabao Cup games, playing 178 minutes, including a cameo in the team’s victory over Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-final.
According to the competition’s rules, the winner club will get 30 medals, and they get to choose who gets them. Almiron’s contributions to Newcastle’s early success make it obvious that the 31-year-old deserves his accolades. Rojas wrote on X (see the post below):
“After Newcastle United’s victory over Liverpool, Miguel Almiron, who left for Atlanta United during the winter transfer window, will receive an EFL Cup medal. The Paraguayan will receive his first and only English football medal because he participated in four games this season.
🇵🇾🏴🏆 Miguel Almiron, despite leaving for Atlanta United in the winter transfer window, will get an EFL Cup medal after Newcastle United’s win vs Liverpool.
Because the Paraguayan played four matches this season, Miggy will get his first & only medal in English football. #NUFC https://t.co/H5dia3vJLf

Almiron played 223 games for the Magpies during his six-year stay on Tyneside. The Paraguayan international had a stellar season in 2022–2023 when he contributed 13 Premier League goals to help Newcastle qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. He finished with 30 goals and 12 assists.
Atlanta United, a team he played for from 2017 to 2018, has made four appearances since he joined in January. He has already recorded an assist as the Georgia-based team begins the MLS season with one victory, one tie, and two losses. The happy South American was spotted switching clothes with Lionel Messi during their most recent match against Inter Miami, closing off an incredible week for Almiron. View the video below:
