A former Manchester City footballer has been detained and might face prison time, according to reports. Kiki Musampa, who spent 18 months on loan at the Etihad Stadium from 2005 to 2006 and made 41 Premier League games, was seized by Dutch authorities on Tuesday.
Musampa, nicknamed “Chris,” earned his name in England by scoring against Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough before leaving in 2006 to join Turkish club Trabzonspor. Earlier in his career, the Dutchman, who gained 43 caps as a teenager, won the Champions League and two Eredivisie crowns with Ajax.
Musampa, now 48, serves as an assistant manager for Jong Ajax, the club’s under-21 team. However, his arrest may jeopardize his role. Police allegedly raided his home this week, confiscating some of his most precious things as part of the inquiry.
Kiki Musampa Faces Potential Prison Time

Musampa was arrested on suspicion of committing about £100,000 in tax fraud, and Dutch investigators raided his residence earlier this week, according to The Sun. During the search, officers found bank records and many costly watches. His 65-year-old accountant was also detained as part of the investigation. Musampa was freed from detention on Wednesday afternoon, pending additional investigations.
According to the Netherlands’ Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIDO), the former Manchester City winger registered himself an overseas tax resident while still earning money in the country. In doing so, he is accused of defrauding the Dutch authorities of about €100,000 (£86,500).
The matter is not without precedent for the ex-professional; it has been claimed that Musampa had a house in Amsterdam repossessed following years of unsolved tax troubles. In light of the arrest, Ajax released a short statement. An official spokeswoman stated: “We are aware of Kiki Musampa’s arrest, but we believe it is too early to respond in detail.”
Musampa’s playing career spans six countries and over a decade at the highest level. The retired winger played for clubs in Europe and Asia, including France, Turkey, and South Korea, before retiring in 2009 after a last stint with Dutch club Willem II.
