FINALLY: Arsenal make Mathys Tel Final decision and look to reward breakthrough stars

The Gunners want to bolster Mikel Arteta’s team before the January transfer window ends.
Arsenal had been negotiating for Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich.
Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri will begin new contract negotiations.

According to German media, Arsenal is unlikely to pursue their interest in Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich, while the team is expected to offer new contracts to breakthrough players Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

After losing Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka to injuries, the Gunners have been looking to bolster Mikel Arteta’s front line, with an emphasis on acquiring a “number nine” to help split Kai Havertz’s workload.

Arsenal proved their firepower even without Saka with a spectacular 5-1 victory over the defending Premier League champions, Manchester City. However, ever since it was revealed that Tel might be open to considering a career outside of Bayern, they have been linked to a move for him.

If Tel does leave the Allianz Arena, it is said that he would prefer a transfer to struggling Manchester United; nevertheless, Arsenal has been trying to ascertain the terms of a possible loan to north London. But according to Sky Sports (via colleague Sky Germany), a deal is not expected to happen just yet.

Bayern’s expectations that Tel leave either permanently or on loan with a purchase obligation are believed to be the obstacle for Arsenal, who do not wish to commit to such terms at this time. Due to such demands, United has also been unable to make progress in negotiations.

It’s becoming more and more likely that 19-year-old Tel will stay with Bayern unless someone is willing to make a concession or Chelsea returns to the negotiating table after initially lowering their interest in him. Tel has already turned down a move to Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal’s rivals, who are far down the Premier League table.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal will give priority to new contracts for Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, who are both currently regulars in Arteta’s first squad.

Following their previous outstanding performances in the Premier League and Champions League, the teens both scored goals in Arsenal’s thumping of City at the Emirates Stadium.

While Nwaneri has displayed Saka-like talent in midfield after becoming the ninth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history when he scored in the 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in November, Lewis-Skelly’s rise has kept summer acquisition Riccardo Calafiori out of the starting lineup at left-back, seemingly ending Oleksandr Zinchenko’s Arsenal career.
